The New Jersey rapper, real name Danielle Balbuena, appears in the video for the track alongside her girlfriend, actress, model and singer Lily-Rose Depp. The ‘Winter Baby’ part of the track has more of a jukebox pop feel, while ‘New Jersey Blues’ is more dark and brooding.
The video is inspired by Wong Kar-Wai’s 1995 movie Fallen Angels and Gaspar Noe’s 2018 film Climax. Depp plays a femme fatale while Balbuena is her love interest as they pursue each other – you can watch it below.
Balbuena, who’s been in a relationship with Depp since January 2023, announced ‘Petrichor’ on social media on Tuesday (October 15) as well as sharing her new single, her first new music since last November’s ‘Natural Habitat’, which features rapper and producer Ken Carson.
Dave Hamelin, Patrick Krief and Tyler Johnson produced ‘Winter Baby / New Jersey Blues’, while Hamelin is also an executive producer on ‘Petrichor’ itself.
Back in June, Balbuena discussed ‘Petrichor’ – the follow-up to her 2022 album ‘You Can’t Kill Me’ – in an interview with Cultured Magazine, sharing, “It’s going to feel like a breath of fresh air. Petrichor is a feeling – the perfect word to describe this body of music.”
She said of her fans, “I hope they’re willing to take it in, to be thirsty and invigorated by it.”
Balbuena also revealed that the album would have less autotune and fewer synths, with more guitar in its place, when compared to her previous material. She arrived in 2018 with her first EP, ‘Glitter’, in March 2018 before her debut album ‘Modus Vivendi’ arrived in January 2020. It was followed by ‘You Can’t Kill Me’, which came out in June 2022.
Meanwhile, ‘Natural Habitat’ appears in the final episode of season three of the HBO/BBC drama Industry, which first aired on September 29.
