9 Albums Out This Week You Should Listen to Now

With so much good music being released all the time, it can be hard to determine what to listen to first. Every week, Pitchfork offers a run-down of significant new releases available on streaming services. This week’s batch includes new albums from Charli XCX, the Strokes, Tyla, and more. Subscribe to Pitchfork’s New Music Friday newsletter to get our recommendations in your inbox every week. (All releases featured here are independently selected by our editors. Charli XCX: Music, Fashion, Film [Atlantic]

How do you follow up a cultural phenomenon like BRAT? If you’re Charli XCX, by unloading your notes app, voice memos, and thorniest garage-rock demos into an unruly, invigorating collection that serves as a stan purge and a creative state-of-the-union all at once. Music, Fashion, Film laces a series of crunchy, distinctly 2000s guitar lines with first-thought-best-thought lyrics about making art and grappling with artifice. It’s both a love letter to current collaborators like A.G. Cook, who finally gets an ode of his own here, and inspirations across mediums. One of the album’s most profound moments arrives via director David Cronenberg, who muses on change and permanence in his gravelly tenor. Music, Fashion, Film is a definite left-turn from the pop provocateur’s recent work, but its earnest blend of cheek and vulnerability is Charli through and through.
