Taylor Swift addresses reviews of The Life of a Showgirl: ‘I’m not the art police’

Taylor Swift has addressed the mixed reviews of The Life of a Showgirl.

The superstar unveiled her twelfth studio album, which includes the lead single The Fate of Ophelia and the titular track featuring Sabrina Carpenter, last week.

Reflecting on the public and critical reaction during an interview for Apple Music’s The Zane Lowe Show on Tuesday, Taylor asserted that she “welcomes the chaos” of the response to her new music.

“The rule of show business is if it’s the first week of my album release and you are saying either my name or my album title, you’re helping,” she began.

Taylor went on to insist that negative reviews don’t bother her.

“I have a lot of respect for people’s subjective opinions on art,” the 35-year-old continued. “I’m not the art police. Everybody is allowed to feel exactly how they want. And what our goal is as entertainers is to be a mirror. Oftentimes, an album is a really, really wild way to look at yourself.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Taylor described how fans sometimes tell her about how their relationship with previous albums has evolved over time.

“What you’re going through in your life is going to affect whether you relate to the music that I’m putting out at any given moment,” she added. “What I often love seeing my fans say is, ‘I used to be someone who didn’t relate to (2017 album) Reputation. And now that I’ve been through some other things in my life, that’s my favourite album.’ Or, ‘I used to be a Fearless girlie, now I’m obsessed with Evermore.'”

And amid a separate conversation on The Roula & Ryan Show, Taylor emphasised that she’s not planning to release any Reputation vault tracks anytime soon despite fans asking for them.

“It’s pretty exciting because that always was the album where I was like, ‘That was my favourite that I felt like didn’t really get a fair swing of it.’ So now that they’re like, ‘We love that album, we want more of it,’ it’s lovely. It’s wonderful. There’s nothing coming from Reputation any time soon,” she divulged. “This is so funny because we just had a new album come out, and I am so in that moment, and like, I think that this moment is a pretty fantastic one.”
