Lauper, who played the final show of her farewell tour this summer, was inducted into the Rock Hall last night (November 8), alongside the likes of The White Stripes, OutKast, Soundgarden, Joe Cocker and Bad Company.

Chappell Roan inducted Lauper, paying tribute to her by wearing a replica of the skirt from the ‘True Colors’ music video. Roan spoke about the song’s influence on her growing up, saying she sang it as a child in her hometown in Missouri.

“That was my first time ever winning a competition for singing, and it’s been important to me ever since,” she said.

Roan then went on to detail Lauper’s influence, saying: “It’s that courage that not only creates incredible art that gives everyone who experiences it the permission to be themselves — it opens their hearts, it changes their mind, and that is its power. Tonight, we honour a woman who redefined what a pop star could look like, sound like, and be.”

After the speech, Lauper appeared onstage and sang ‘True Colors’, as well as her 1984 hit ‘Time After Time’, for which she was joined by Raye. She then ended the medley by bringing Avril Lavigne and Salt-N-Pepa onstage for ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’. Check out clips below.

Lauper then gave a speech, opening by saying: “See what happens when you let the riff-raff in?” before thanking her predecessors, adding: “I just want to say that I stand on the shoulders of the women who came before me, and my shoulders are broad enough to have the women who came after me stand on mine.”

Closing her speech, she told the crowd: “The little kid in me still believes that rock and roll can save the world. I just want to say now of all time, let’s come together again and do good in the world because it needs us.”

Lauper has also previously expressed her mutual love for the ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ pop star. In the documentary Let The Canary Sing, the ‘Time After Time’ artist recalled hearing Roan’s hit ‘Pink Pony Club’ for the first time.

“Such dusky, yearning keyboard pop,” Lauper said (via Consequence). “Wow, born in 1998, she’s even younger than my son! And that hair! That kind of reminds me of what I did on the blues record, ‘Memphis Blues’ [2010]… just incredible!”
