NYC underground rapper Max B released from prison after 16 years

Underground rapper Max B has been released from prison today (November 9) after serving 16 years in prison.

The self-proclaimed Wavy God was originally sentenced to 75 years behind bars in 2009 for charges related to a 2006 burglary gone wrong. However, he was able to have his sentence significantly reduced to 12 years in 2019 with time served and last year he confirmed he would be released in 2025.

Speaking on The Joe Budden Podcast, the New York rapper called from prison at the time to confirm he will “be out November 9 2025, baby”.

“This shit is almost over. Walking this thing down one day at a time, we keep on grinding. Everything good,” Max B said when asked how he is, adding: “The movement is on the way: we’re making America wavy again.”

Upon his release, Max B was greeted by his family and friends in a joyful moment captured and shared on Instagram by his longtime friend and collaborator French Montana. The rapper’s homecoming coincided with Montana’s 41st birthday.

“CANT MAKE THIS UP ! MY BROTHER REALLY CAME HOME ON MY B DAY ! HAMDULILLAH,” Montana captioned the video. “WALKED IT DOWN ! NO MORE FREE YOU.”

Earlier this year, Young Thug also shared a clip of himself speaking with Max B over the phone from prison.

“Man, I’m in here grinding this shit out,” Max told the rapper at the time, who then asked if he’d be released soon. “Hell yeah, we ’bout to hit the home stretch, baby,” he replied. “We gon’ make some history?”

Young Thug himself pleaded guilty to six charges related to gang and racketeering activity in November 2024, having been held in jail for over two years without bail. He was released that month as part of a negotiated sentence that accounted for time already served.

It came after he was indicted by Georgia prosecutors along with dozens of others in May 2022 under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

Prosecutors alleged that YSL was more than a label, accusing it of operating as a front for a criminal gang that was involved in murders and drug trafficking.
