David Duchovny has only just heard Catatonia’s ‘The X-Files’ song ‘Mulder And Scully’

David Duchovny has finally heard the Catatonia song ‘Mulder And Scully’, 27 years after the song’s release.

The actor is best known for his role as FBI Agent Fox Mulder in The X-Files, a paranormal mystery series that ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002, as well as getting two movie spin-offs and a revival series in 2016.

In 1998, at the peak of the show’s popularity, his character, along with co-star Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully, were referenced by Catatonia in the title and chorus of their song ‘Mulder And Scully’. Telling the story of a mysterious relationship, frontwoman Cerys Matthews sings ‘Things are getting strange, I’m starting to worry/This could be a case for Mulder and Scully’.

The song reached number three in the UK charts at the time, as was certified silver, selling over 200,000 copies. However, Duchovny admitted during an interview with BBC Wales that he had not heard the song.

“I don’t think I have. I know that it exists” he said. “I feel like I’ve seen a CD of it, I can almost envisage the album art, but I can’t remember ever having heard it.” After being played the track on the show, he reacted: “I can tell you right now, I’ve never heard that. I would have remembered that if I had heard it. It is catchy. I like it.”

Duchovny is currently promoting the British TV series Malice, co-starring Jack Whitehall, which premiered on November 14 on Amazon Prime Video.

The X-Files is currently being rebooted by Sinners filmmaker Ryan Coogler, with Anderson teasing in May that she would be open to appear on the show.

Last year, both Duchovny and Anderson recalled drifting apart during The X-Files’ most successful years. “There was a long time, working on the show, where we were just not even dealing with one another off-camera,” he recalled. “And there was a lot of tension. Which didn’t matter, apparently, for the work cause we’re both fucking crazy, I guess. We could just go out there and do what we needed to do.”

As for Catatonia, their song ‘Road Rage’ was covered by CMAT at this year’s Green Man Festival in August.
