Primal Scream share tribute after Manchester United and fans honour Mani: “His light shines on”

Primal Scream have shared a further tribute to Mani after Manchester United Football Club – Mani’s favourite team – and the club’s fans honoured him this week.

Mani originally found fame as bassist for The Stone Roses, joining in 1987 and playing on both their iconic albums, until they first disbanded in 1996. He then went on to join Primal Scream and stayed with them until 2011, when The Stone Roses reformed. He died last Thursday (November 20), aged 63.

News of his passing was shared by his brother Greg, who wrote on social media: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother gary mani mounfield.” Tributes then came in from the likes of Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown, Primal Scream’s Simone Butler, Liam Gallagher and many more.

Mani was honoured by his favourite team last week who shared a tribute after news of his passing. “Manchester United is deeply saddened by the news that Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, the much-loved bass player with The Stone Roses, has passed away aged 63,” MUFC wrote in a statement.

It continued: “A lifelong Red and friend of the club…Mani’s music continues to be played at every Old Trafford matchday and most notably when ‘This is the One’ signals the teams walking out of the tunnel. It continued to make him proud when attending fixtures with his family. The club was part of his DNA and he was proud to be Red.”

They concluded: “A part of Manchester’s history, Mani will be sadly missed by everybody who knew and loved him. The club’s thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”

At MUFC’s game against Everton on Monday (November 24), fans could also be seen unfurling a banner tribute to Mani, organised by supporter group The Red Army (TRA), which read ‘RIP Mani’. Underneath was an image of the musician. Old Trafford also erupted into cheers and applause when ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ and ‘This Is The One’ played at the ground.

In response, Primal Scream later shared a picture of the tribute on their Instagram page, writing: “Mani … Knighted by the terraces. Loved by everyone who ever knew or met him. He lit up our lives and funked up our sound. A true punk and working class hero. His light shines on.” They also shared several other photos of Mani – check out the tribute below:

Last week (November 22), Primal Scream paid tribute to Mani during their Manchester Warehouse Project show. The band performed ‘I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have’ in his hometown. The band also brought up a huge backdrop of their late bassist during the show, which current bassist Simone Butler later shared on her Instagram page.

Following his passing last week, Butler paid tribute to Mani, writing: “Truly in shock at this. An incredible loss to everyone who knew and loved him. The moment u met Mani u loved him. The most brilliant and wickedly sharp sense of humour and the biggest heart and generosity. The smile in that first pics was so absolutely him. He called me his scorpio bass sister. My heart is breaking for his boys, family and loved ones. Was meant to see him tmro in Manchester.

“A terrible and sad loss. An amazing person, so so loved by everyone all over the world X just heartbreaking.”

The band also posted a picture of Mani on their official account when they learned of his death last week.

Meanwhile, fans have been re-sharing a brilliant clip of Mani at the NME Awards from 2008.

Posted numerous times on different accounts on Instagram over the weekend, the clip shows the musician taking to the stage with his Primal Scream bandmate Bobby Gillespie to present the award for Best Album. He began by making a quip at how quiet the audience had been up until then.

“How are you all doing? Fucking hell, you woke up,” he said, before joking: “It’s been like a Leonard Cohen B-side at a snooker tournament in fucking space.”

After the crowd burst into laughter at the jab, he went on to say: “Right then, that’s more like it. Alright, what are we here for? It’s the nominations for the Best Album which isn’t a [Primal] Scream album this year.”

“RIP Mani what a character sadly missed,” one fan commented on the post, while another agreed and shared: “Amazing. What an absolute legend.”

“Mani you fuckin turned my world upside down, I will miss you immensely,” a third commented. “Thank you so much for your talent and your staying true to your roots man, RIP my friend.”

Remembering the time at the 2008 ceremony, The Cribs also shared a picture of Mani on the night and recalled an interaction they had with him while at the NME Awards.

In a post on X/Twitter, the band shared that Mani came up to them and asked what it was like “to be in a band with a legend”. Assuming that he meant Smiths legend Johnny Marr, Mani then went on to joke: “nah mate, I meant your kid”.

In their tribute to the Stone Roses legend, The Cribs went on to describe Mani as “so funny” and “a really nice guy”.

Since news of Mani’s death, both Oasis and Richard Ashcroft paid respects to the musician during their respective performances in Brazil over the weekend. The latter dedicated The Verve classic ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ to him, while Liam and Noel Gallagher honoured him on ‘Live Forever’.

Also this weekend, My Bloody Valentine kicked off their first tour in seven years in Dublin and dedicated the gig to the icon.

You can read these and many more tributes from the likes of Elbow, Richard Ashcroft, Tim Burgees and Peter Hook here.
