Gracie Abrams slams Donald Trump’s “poisonous and vile narcissism” after mass shootings and Rob Reiner’s death

Gracie Abrams has criticised US President Donald Trump over “poisonous and vile narcissism”.

The singer took to her Instagram story to highlight the slew of tragedies occurring across the world over the past few days, highlighting the mass shootings in Bondi Beach, Australia and Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island that happened over the weekend.

Sharing a photo of a candle flame yesterday (December 16), Abrams wrote: “I am beyond heartbroken for the victims at Bondi. Devastated for their families during the holiday, a time meant for gathering and for light. I feel sick inside for the victims and for the community at Brown. Students on their campus. What are we talking about?”

“The conditions in Gaza are beyond the pale,” she continued, referencing the ongoing “Earthshattering pain. The tarps the Palestinian people are living under are being whipped by the wind and the rain through the mud. Total desecration.”

Abrams then went on to mention the death of late film director Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, who were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday December 14. The LAPD later said that it was investigating the case as an “apparent homicide”, and outlets including TMZ and People reported that the two had suffered wounds consistent with a knife attack.

On Monday, it was revealed that their 32-year-old son Nick Reiner had been arrested and was in custody on $4million (£2.9million) bail.

Upon learning of their deaths, Trump took to Truth Social to imply a link between Reiner’s death and his criticism of the Trump Administration.

“Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS,” the President’s post said.

Abrams goes on to criticise Trump’s response, writing: “Within 24 hours of the most unimaginable tragedy a family can endure, we see the President yet again reveal the most poisonous and vile narcissism maybe in the history of humanity. Indefensible.”

“It is getting harder to find the words to describe the pain in the world,” the musician added. “I am lighting a candle for everybody who is hurting.”

Trump’s post has been condemned by a number of names in entertainment, including Jack White, who called Trump a “disgusting, vile, egomaniac loser, child”. Long-time Trump critic Jimmy Kimmel denounced the comments on his show, remarking: “Just when you think he can’t go any lower, he somehow finds a way to do that.”

Frozen star Josh Gad called Trump a “fucking psychopath,” while on talk show The View, Whoopi Goldberg asked that the comments not be read on air. “Don’t read it,” she asked co-host Sunny Hostin. “Just tell them that it’s there”.

In other news, back in October, Abrams was among over 550 musicians, actors, directors, and writers who teamed up to revive the Committee For The First Amendment, a group formed in the late 1940s that opposed suppression of free speech.
