Tributes paid to The Ray Summers’ frontman Andrew Ure, who died during Hogmanay hike, age 41

Tributes have been paid to The Ray Summers’ frontman Andrew Ure, who has died aged 41 during a hike.

The singer and business man was best known as the frontman of Falkirk band The Ray Summers, which formed in 2008 and went on to book support slots with big names including Paolo Nutini and Doves.

It has been confirmed that he died during a Hogmanay hike, which he did with his dog in the Arrochar Alps. The hike came one day after his 41st birthday, and concerns were first raised by family members when he did not return home around the time that they expected.

BBC News reports that Arrochar Mountain Rescue (AMR) claims that Police Scotland led the search with the help of a rescue helicopter, and Ure was found and pronounced dead at the scene.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal,” a spokesperson told the outlet, adding that “the dog was found alive and unharmed and has since been reunited with the man’s family.”

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family, friends, and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss,” they continued.

Ure’s partner Linsey Waddell confirmed the news on social media and shared a touching tribute, describing him as “my guiding light and the biggest star of all” (via The National).

His brother, David, also paid his respects and thanked the mountain rescue team for their support and help. “So many people have lost a part of their world as he meant so much to many,” David continued. “For me, I’ve lost my wee brother, my best pal, my business partner, my sounding board, and the daily reason I used my phone. Heartbroken doesn’t even come close.”

As well as fronting The Ray Summers, Ure also launched the Vibration music festival in Falkirk in 2019, and worked as a director of The Wee Whisky shop in Linlithgow.

After hearing about the loss, the latter shared a post that read: “Words cannot fully express the pain of this loss, and our thoughts are with Andrew’s family at this incredibly difficult time. Thank you to everyone who has already reached out with their kind messages and condolences.”

Other tributes have come from fellow artist Stevie Jukes (via Daily Record), who described The Ray Summers band as “one of the best bands around and one we truly looked up to, with Andy front and centre as one of the finest frontmen in the country”.

Another musician took to X/Twitter to write: “Was saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Andrew Ure. I didn’t know Andrew personally but like many I played some shows with The Ray Summers in previous bands and our paths often crossed at that time. Andrew seemed like a dedicated family man and my thoughts are with them.”

Another band called The Poachers shared that all of the members were “saddened to learn of the much too early passing of The Ray Summers front man Andrew Ure on Hogmannay”. They continued: “Andrew was an incredible force on stage and great company off it. Our thoughts are with his friends n family.”

Elsewhere, a fan took to social media to write: “Another reminder life can turn on a dime: Andrew Ure, lead singer from Falkirk, passed away on Hogmanay during a solo hike. His friends and family are heartbroken, and so is the Scottish music scene. We’ve lost a brilliant talent far too soon.”

The Scottish band, after forming in 2008, went on to perform at festivals including Rockness, T in the Park and The Camden Crawl. Their sound was inspired by a variety of indie artists including Love, The Coral, The Bees and Super Furry Animals, and throughout their time together they supported artists such as Doves, The Bluetones, Paolo Nutini, The Charlatans and Idlewild.

Scotland police said that the reports of “concern for a hillwalker missing on Ben Vane, near Arrochar” came in at around 7pm on Wednesday December 31.

“Officers and Arrochar Mountain Rescue Team attended and traced the 41-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene,” the statement continued. “There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
