The UK music scene is kicking off 2026 with a fascinating blend of modern soul dominance and Britpop nostalgia. As the first full week of the year unfolds, the Official Albums Chart is witnessing a thrilling tug-of-war at the top, while a legendary indie classic makes an astronomical leap back into the spotlight.

Olivia Dean Eyes Back-to-Back Success

Olivia Dean is currently the artist to beat. Her sophomore album, The Art of Loving, has already secured its place in history as the first Number 1 album of 2026. This week, she is fighting to maintain that momentum, eyeing a second consecutive week—and her third non-consecutive week overall—at the summit.

However, the race is far from a victory lap. Dean faces intense pressure from Sabrina Carpenter, whose album Man’s Best Friend is surging toward the top spot following a recent bonus track release. Currently sitting at Number 2, Carpenter is looking to claim her first Number 1 since September 2025.

The Stone Roses Stage a Massive Comeback

While the battle for Number 1 rages, the week’s biggest story might be the resurgence of The Stone Roses. Their iconic 1989 self-titled debut is currently the midweek’s highest climber, projected to jump a staggering 52 places to land at Number 31. This revival of the “Madchester” sound proves that the band’s influence remains as potent as ever, nearly four decades after the album’s original release following Mani’s death.

A Week of Icons and Milestones

The chart is currently a haven for legacy acts and poignant tributes:

David Bowie’s Legacy is aiming for a Top 40 finish (36) as the world marks the 10th anniversary of his passing on January 10.

Fleetwood Mac are reaching new heights with 50 Years – Don’t Stop at Number 3 and Rumours climbing to Number 6.

ABBA are dancing back toward the Top 10 with Gold – Greatest Hits (8).

With modern stars like Alex Warren (9) and Teddy Swims (35) also holding strong, the first chart of 2026 is shaping up to be a perfect bridge between music’s rich history and its bright future.
