“Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” featured on the singer-songwriter’s debut, Grace

Jeff Buckley‘s exquisite offering, “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over,” has reached the Billboard Hot 100 nearly three decades after his tragic death.

The haunting song is the seventh track off the singer-songwriter’s legendary debut album, Grace, which released in 1994. Billboard announced the news on Tuesday, stating that the song reached Number 97 on the chart on Jan. 31

The outlet contributed its arrival from “almost entirely from its streaming sum” of 3.8 million official U.S. streams during the Jan. 16-22 tracking week, citing Luminate. Billboard noted that social media platforms like TikTok, where fans used snippets of the song to soundtrack videos, fueled its resurgence over the past year.

“Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” made its first chart appearance at Number 22 on the Hot Rock and Alternative Songs chart in April 2025, and after dropping off, it returned in July ahead of Amy Berg’s documentary, It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, in August last year. The song has remained on the chart since, reaching Number 12.

Buckleye wrote the track about his fading relationship with his girlfriend Rebecca Moore, who Buckley had met at a tribute to his late father, folk singer Tim Buckley. “I wrote this song while lying listening to the telephone in my apartment,” Buckley told a crowd while performing in Italy in July 1995. “But she never called.”

It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley pays tribute to the young singer-songwriter who died in 1997 and his too-short career. Buckley was just 30, and had been working on his second studio album at the time of his accidental drowning in a Tennessee river.
