Sharon Osbourne “seriously thinking about running for mayor of Birmingham”

Sharon Osbourne “seriously thinking about running for mayor of Birmingham”

Sharon Osbourne has revealed that she is “seriously thinking” about running to become the Mayor of Birmingham.

The music manager, television personality, and widow of heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne made the comments while on the red carpet for this year’s Grammy Awards.

Speaking briefly to Billboard, Sharon was told by host Leila Cobo that she was getting praise for how well she spoke at one of the Grammy-related events ahead of Sunday night’s ceremony (February 1).

In response, Sharon thanked the host for her compliment and suggested that the skill may come in handy soon as she is “seriously thinking about running for mayor of Birmingham”.

Due to the quick pace of the interview, there was little time for Sharon to expand on why she wanted to run, or how far along she was into looking at the process.

That being said, she has dropped hints about wanting to turn her sights to politics before then too. As reported by GB News ahead of the Grammys, Osbourne said that she was thinking of getting involved in politics in the UK city after learning that someone with a terrorism conviction was allegedly seeking a seat on Birmingham’s City Council.

“This has nothing to do with racism. I think I’m gonna move to Birmingham and put my name down for the ballot to be on the council. I’m serious,” she said.

The person seeking the seat is Shahid Butt, who was reportedly given a five-year prison sentence in 1999. GB News writes that he has previously claimed that the charge against him was “fabricated” and that he was “falsely convicted”.

He maintains his innocence against the allegations and convictions raised against him.

While it remains unclear just how far along Sharon is with trying to get involved with Birmingham’s politics, if she were to get into office as mayor soon, she would be required to hold the position for at least a year. She would replace the current Lord Mayor of the city, Zafar Iqbal.

Iqbal was sworn in last May, and was also present during the public funeral procession that took place in the city’s streets last July, following Ozzy’s death. In December, the late star posthumously received Birmingham’s Lord Mayor’s Award on what would have been his 77th birthday.

“An iconic and much missed son of Birmingham, the city he loved so much 🖤 Ozzy forever,” Iqbal wrote.

At the Grammys 2026, Sharon and her children, Kelly and Jack, were present in the audience when Post Malone, Slash, Chad Smith, Duff McKagan and more paid a moving tribute to the Black Sabbath frontman. They came together to cover the band’s track ‘War Pigs’ on the night.

The music icon passed away last summer after raising millions for charity with his ‘Back To The Beginning’ final show.

At that show, Yungblud, Extreme‘s Nuno Bettencourt, Anthrax’s Frank Bello, Adam Wakeman, and Sleep Token’s drummer ‘II’, came together to perform a cover of Ozzy’s song ‘Changes’, and at the Grammys, took home the win for Best Rock Performance as a result.

Speaking about the tribute on the night from Post Malone and co. Kelly told Billboard: “[Them] playing for him tonight, it’s the greatest thing. They all grew up in this industry together and Ozzy loved them, they loved him. And it’s just, it’s, it’s fantastic.”

Speaking of the Best Rock Performance win, Kelly continued: “Yungblud won tonight with ‘Changes,’ which is so huge and we’re so happy for him. We’re just here to celebrate his legacy and to thank everybody who has supported us through such a hard time.”

It was Kendrick Lamar who took home the most trophy wins on the night, and other memorable moments from the 2026 Grammys included Bad Bunny delivering an impassioned “ICE out” acceptance speech after winning in the Best Musica Urbana Album category.

Billie Eilish also hit out at ICE after winning Song Of The Year for ‘Wildflower’, and when Olivia Dean won in the Best New Artist category, she used her time on stage to celebrate immigrants. Check out a full list of winners from the 2026 Grammys here.
