America’s Next Top Model is back in the spotlight after a shocking Netflix documentary alleged mistreatment of contestants, producer manipulation and behind-the-scenes drama among the cast and crew.
Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model premiered Feb. 16 on Netflix with the three-episode docuseries streaming online now. The new doc has not only raised new questions about the popular modeling competition show but also renewed interest in the original series, which ran from 2003 to 2018. Though it’s been long off the air, fans are revisiting the show to support their favorites, and to look back at some of the wild on-set moments discussed in the doc (think: an eyebrow-raising race-swapping photo shoot, makeover meltdowns, or the time host Tyra Banks pressured a contestant into closing the gap between her teeth).

The Tyra Banks-created show ran for a total of 24 cycles on television across UPN, The CW and VH1. Only cycles 1-22 are available to stream online at this time (the final two seasons aired on VH1 and the network has yet to release them for streaming).

While the Reality Check documentary is only streaming on Netflix right now and not available to stream or download on Prime Video, Amazon does have this tell-all book from popular Cycle 9 contestant Sarah Hartshorne.
Titled A Memoir of Makeovers, Manipulation, and Not Becoming America’s Next Top Model, the book delves into the plus-size contestant’s experience with auditioning for the show, filming the made-for-TV challenges, and what it felt like inside the L.A. “model house” which was “teeming with hidden cameras and elaborately constructed tensions.”
Per a book description: “As the season unfolds and the producers’ interview questions about her weight and her opinions of the other girls become increasingly pointed, Hartshorne uncovers the destabilizing methods employed to film ‘reality.’”
Banks and ANTM producer Ken Mok have denied any allegations raised in Hartshorne’s book and in the documentary, insisting that they were there to film a reality TV show and always had the contestants’ — and viewers’ — interests at heart.
