Harry Styles says ‘American Girls’ is about watching his friends get married

Harry Styles has shed light on the meaning behind the lyrics of ‘American Girls’, which he’s said was largely inspired by watching his friends get married.

Styles released his latest album ‘Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally’ on Friday (March 6), and to mark the occasion, also shared ‘American Girls’ as a single with an action-packed music video to boot.

During a recent sit-down with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, Styles delved into the inspiration behind each song on the record. The “mission statement” of the album, he said, was to create an accurate reflection of his inner world.

“The record for me is about how do I still have my experience while I’m playing it?” he explained. “It was like, what music do I have to make for me to be on stage feeling like I’m in the middle of the dance floor?”

As for ‘American Girls’, he told Lowe: “It’s actually quite a lonely song in a lot of ways. I watched my three closest friends get married, and actually seeing them trust in something and risk something to find something truly fulfilling in a way that isn’t as like shiny and on paper as exciting.”

“Watching them get married, I was like, ‘I’m single, so I’m having all the fun.’ And ‘American Girls’ is actually about watching them get married, and there just is a magic when you find the right person that you want to be with. I think watching them do that and seeing that it doesn’t come without any uncertainty, it doesn’t come without any risk.”

The same day as the record came out, Styles played it in full at Manchester’s Co-op Live, marking his first full show in almost three years, exactly a week after he gave ‘Aperture’ its live debut in the same building to open the BRITs 2026 the previous weekend.

The performance was filmed by Netflix for a new concert film, Harry Styles. One Night In Manchester. Fans were strictly banned from capturing any footage of the gig, and were made to secure their phones in a recyclable bag that obscured the camera. Upon entry, ticketholders picked up free disposable cameras so that they could still document “special moments and share them after the show”. He also gifted 50 free tickets to the show to pupils from his old school.

Styles has his massive ‘Together, Together’ series of residencies coming up, which boasts a record-breaking 12-night stint at London’s Wembley Stadium – find remaining tickets here – as well as a 30-date residency in New York City. You can find remaining tickets here.

The tour begins in Amsterdam on May 16, before he heads to London, Sâo Paulo, Mexico City, NYC, Melbourne and Sydney, wrapping the tour up on December 13. Find remaining Australia tickets here.

Support on these shows comes from Robyn, Shania Twain, Fcukers, Jorja Smith, Jamie xx, Fousheé, Skye Newman and Baby J, and will see him play new cuts from the album.

NME gave the album a positive four-star review, describing it as “the most exploratory album of his career so far, trying out new things and steering his ship in new directions.”

“Lead single ‘Aperture’ set the tone with its LCD Soundsystem-inspired electronic build, and the rest of the album largely follows suit – with some surprise deviations along the way,” it read.

“But, very occasionally, there are things that don’t quite hit the target. ‘American Girls’ is fun but easily forgettable when held up against the rest of the tracklist, and the acoustic moment of penultimate song ‘Paint By Numbers’ is a little jarring between ‘Dance No More’ and the gorgeous synth soar of ‘Carla’s Song’. As Styles has shown us, though, even life’s blips have value, and these instances can’t stop his fourth album from feeling like a triumph.”
