Morrissey cancels Valencia gig ‘due to sleep deprivation’

Morrissey cancelled a gig a show in Valencia “due to sleep deprivation”.

The former Smiths frontman was due to perform in the Spanish city on Thursday (12.03.26) but the gig was axed as the Everyday is Like Sunday hitmaker was left sleep-deprived due to the noisy Las Fallas festival.

A statement on the artist’s Morrissey Central website before the cancellation read: “Having travelled for two days by road, Morrissey reached the hotel in Valance late on Wednesday (11.03.26). Any form of sleep or rest throughout the night was impossible due to festival noise/ loud techno singing/ megaphone announcements.

“This experience has left Morrissey in a catatonic state. Before leaving for tonight’s scheduled concert, please check that the show remains possible under these circumstances.”

A follow-up message confirmed that the gig would not be taking place.

It read: “Tonight’s scheduled show in Valencia has been rendered impossible due to sleep deprivation. Morrissey drove from Milan to Valencia but has been unable to rest in Valencia due to noise.

“The show is not cancelled. Circumstances render the show impossible.”

Morrissey described his Plaza Manises hotel as an “indescribable hell”.

The 66-year-old singer said: “It will take me one year to recover. And that is an understatement.”

The Suedehead artist has a reputation for axing gigs and has already cancelled six dates on his current tour, including due to “artist illness” in St Petersburg, Florida in January.

A Ticketmaster statement at the time read:  “Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event.

“You don’t need to do a thing. We’ll issue a refund to the original method of payment used at time of purchase, as soon as funds are received from the Event Organizer. It should appear on your account within 14-21 days.”

Morrissey released his latest solo album Make-Up is a Lie last week – his first record for over five years – and reflected on the drawn-out journey to the release of the title track.

He penned on Morrissey Central: “The wait has sometimes felt like a tragedy, but the release today of Make-up Is A Lie is like a reunion of lovers.

“And after several plays it seems to have existed always. We can now place our faith in what is visible. Please sit in your favourite chair in your dark cabin with the lights out – or, get off your head and enjoy some impulsive self-humiliation – as I often do. I hope you consider Make-up Is A Lie to be worth the attention that you give it. Many of us, here, and in France, Turkey, Poland, The Netherlands, Denmark, Greece, America, England… We have waited because our belief is unchallengeable: let the squawkers squawk. What survives beyond their grasp is love. I insist on being myself in spite of much discouragement, and this new music is a valid portrait of much more to come in 2026.”
