Trent Reznor speaks out on making new music and future of playing live at tour finale

During the final show of Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Peel It Back’ tour, Trent Reznor opened up about the future of the band and clarified some comments he made last month.

The huge 63-date tour, which began in September 2025, came to an end in Sacramento on Monday night (March 16).

Speaking during the band’s show in Tulsa on February 27, he said: “I don’t know if we’re gonna be touring anymore after this, but I’m proud of the show that we’re doing right now,” the frontman declared at the time.

In Sacramento, however, he clarified his comments. “As some of you may know, this is the last show of the tour,” he said. “And to be clear, I think I said something the other day that then got misconstrued into something that is not intentionally necessarily true.

“What I said was, this is the last show of this tour and we don’t have any shows booked and we don’t have any plans to book any shows any time in the future so far. That doesn’t mean we may not tour again.”

The singer and multi-instrumentalist added: “It won’t be next month, it won’t be this year. I never said we were intentionally stopping and I never meant that. But, to be truthful, we didn’t tour for a while before this tour because, frankly, I didn’t know if we could do it well and if it still mattered and if we really feel like we had something to say.

“And the combination of this band and this crew and a lot of hard work and we put on a show that I’m really fucking proud of. I thank you for coming and attending. I appreciate it. It makes us all feel like we have a fucking purpose.”

While their tour itself might be over, Nine Inch Nails – which comprises Reznor and Atticus Ross as official members as well as touring members Robin Finck, Josh Freese and Stu Brooks – have more shows next month.

They’re set to appear at both weekends of Coachella, on April 10 and 17, alongside German electronic artist Boys Noize, who opened for them on the ‘Peel It Back’ tour. Together, they are performing as Nine Inch Noize.

Nine Inch Nails, meanwhile, brought their ‘Peel It Back’ world tour to the UK and Europe last summer. Reviewing their performance at Mad Cool in Madrid last July, NME wrote: “Judging by their Mad Cool headline set, there is no question that the group won’t be meticulously maintaining their legacy over the next few decades. From the exquisite visuals (which, even in their calmest moments, still blow some of the biggest names out of the water) to their effortless on-stage rapport and the sheer quality of their live sound, this sensational outing is vintage Nails. Welcome back, guys. We’ve missed you.”

Away from touring, Reznor also said in Sacramento that new music would be on the way. “And if we feel inspired and if we feel we can beat this [show], we’ll see you again. And I hope to see you again and I hope you come see us if we do.”

It comes after reports last year that the band were working on new material. Speaking to Consequence, Reznor said: “We are working on new stuff and we’re excited to work on it, and we are prioritising working on Nine Inch Nails over just taking on every single thing that comes up in the other category.”

The band’s last album was 2020’s double LP ‘Ghosts V-VI’, which was surprise-released as a free download during the pandemic. Since then, Reznor and Ross have been busy working on various film scores, including Challengers, Empire of Light and TRON: Ares.

The latter was released in September, and recently the band shared a stacked digital companion piece called ‘Tron Ares: Divergence’. It featured 44 tracks, some of which were remixes and previously unreleased material.
