Dave Grohl has opened up about the aftermath of publicly admitting to cheating on his wife, revealing that he’s “been in therapy six days a week for 70 weeks”.
The Foo Fighters frontman shared in autumn 2024 that he’d become a father “outside of my marriage”. At the time, he said he was “doing everything I can to regain the trust” of his wife, Jordyn Blum, and their three daughters, Violet, Harper and Ophelia.
Reports later claimed that the Foos had cancelled a planned headline tour for summer 2025.
Now, Grohl has spoken out about the scandal during a new interview with The Guardian. “I’ve been in therapy six days a week for 70 weeks,” he told the publication. “I did the math the other day: over 430 sessions.”
The musician was asked whether his admission of infidelity had contributed to him deciding to go to therapy. “There were so many things that led me to this therapy,” Grohl responded.
“I have to be perfectly honest. Writing songs and writing lyrics about these things is sometimes enough. As far as having a deeper, longer conversation about them, I still do reserve a lot of this for my own personal life, as impersonal and public as it may seem.
“But I think that for many reasons, I wound up in a place that I needed to stop and sit with myself and re-evaluate myself. It’s an ongoing process.”
He said seeking professional help had changed his perspective, admitting that he was once someone who’d be “pulled in different directions emotionally without having this anchor, this centred feeling”.
When asked how it felt to share the details of his cheating on social media, Grohl remembered: “I had to turn everything off, one of those things being my concern for what other people think.
“Being able to shut off that part of yourself can be sometimes a very healthy exercise in considering life within your immediate radius. Not giving all of that so much currency within yourself that it can completely destroy yourself.”
He also said he was susceptible to an “addiction to achievement”, calling this “dangerous”. Grohl went on to explain that there could be a feeling of “emptiness” after fulfilling a personal “goal”.
“And you’re like, shit, I need to fill it up with something else,” he explained. He was then pressed on whether this was what led him to cheat. “No,” Grohl replied. “I think that’s how I ended up overextending myself and getting lost. I wasn’t sitting with myself and really letting [feelings] go from my head into my heart. Getting to the point where I was just like, I need to stop, turn everything off and find my heart.”
Bassist Nate Mendel said he was “of course” worried about Foo Fighters being damaged by the revelations. Grohl was asked if he had won back the trust of his wife and family. “I think [the lyrics] speak volumes,” he answered, referring to recent single ‘Your Favorite Toy’. “Maybe more than I can speak right now.”
He said the song was “basically one side of yourself screaming at the other: I’m almost taunting myself for all of those things that needed to be examined”. However, Grohl declined to elaborate on what these things were.
Grohl admitted that he’s “not the greatest communicator”, but said therapy had helped with this: “Not only with others, but with myself.”
The frontman’s statement in 2024 read: “I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her [his new daughter].
“I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We’re grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together.”
His representatives subsequently debunked a viral post by an Instagram user, claiming she was the mother of Grohl’s “love child”.
Grohl and Blum have been married since 2003. Speaking to The Guardian in 2007, the musician shared: “[My wife] Jordyn and [daughter] Violet are anchors that keep me from completely disappearing.”
Foo Fighters shared another new single, ‘Caught In The Echo’, today (Friday March 20). The band’s 12th studio album, also titled ‘Your Favorite Toy’, is due for release on April 24 via Roswell Records/Columbia Records.
They showcased an as-yet-unreleased tune, ‘Of All People’, at their recent run of intimate UK and Ireland shows in Dublin, London and Manchester.
The Foos will embark on their European ‘Take Cover’ tour this summer, including two concerts at Anfield stadium in Liverpool (find any remaining tickets here). Their European festival dates feature stops at Mad Cool, Nos Alive, Pinkpop and more.
They’ll play some North American dates over the summer and autumn, too, and have announced an Australia and New Zealand leg for 2026 and 2027.
Last month, Grohl revealed that Foos’ forthcoming album was stacked with “uptempo” and “noisy, loud bangers” that feel like they’re from “the old days”.
Meanwhile, Grohl has said the death of former drummer Taylor Hawkins “made me question everything about life”, admitting: “I still have a hard time making sense of it.” He’d previously opened up about the “complicated” journey to find a new drummer following Hawkins’ passing.
