Sublime Announce First Album in 30 Years

Two years after their Coachella reunion shows, where Jakob Nowell assumed his late father’s frontman duties, Sublime have announced their first album since 1996. With a new lineup of Nowell plus founding members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, the SoCal ska-punk band will share Until the Sun Explodes on June 12 via Atlantic. Below, watch a video for the LP’s title track, which was shot around Long Beach and includes cameos from pro skateboarders Christian Hosoi and Omar Hassan.

“The last Sublime record that will ever be made is Self-Titled,” Nowell said in a press statement. “There’s no replacing history, period. Until the Sun Explodes the album is an epilogue, and ‘Until the Sun Explodes’ the single is the epilogue to the epilogue. It is a tribute to the expansive works of Sublime, it is an acknowledgment for all that my father has done for me my entire life, and most importantly it is a thank you. I love you dad, and I owe you my life.”

In 2024, Sublime also put out “Feel Like That,” a collaboration with the reggae group Stick Figure that featured archival recordings of Bradley Nowell alongside new vocals from Jakob Nowell. That song doesn’t appear on Until the Sun Explodes, but last year’s single “Ensenada” does.

Bassist Wilson, drummer Gaugh, and singer-guitarist Bradley Nowell formed Sublime in 1988. They released their debut album, 40oz. to Freedom, in 1992, following it up with 1994’s Robbin’ the Hood. Nowell died of a heroin overdose in 1996, two months before the band’s self-titled album was set to come out. Wilson and Gaugh continued to tour extensively under various names, including Sublime With Rome. KJ Apa is currently set to star as Nowell in a Sublime biopic helmed by Justin Chon.
