Britney Spears’s ex-husband Kevin Federline is “happy that she is getting help” in rehab.

Over the weekend, a representative for the pop star confirmed that she had voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility last week, several weeks after she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol (DUI).

Reacting to the news, her ex-husband’s lawyer issued a statement in support of her decision on Monday.

“Kevin is aware of the reports that she has checked into rehab and that if she needs help, he is happy that she is getting help and that the decision appears to be one that she made and not one imposed upon her by others if it was,” his attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, told TMZ.

“The key is that whatever the recommended treatment plan is that she follows it and completes it,” he added.

The Toxic singer was arrested for DUI on 4 March after being pulled over by police officers in Ventura, California. She was released from custody the following day.

At the time, her rep told People that the “unfortunate incident” was “completely inexcusable”.

“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” they continued. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

Responding to the arrest days later, Kaplan said on his client’s behalf, “Kevin hopes for the best for Britney and if help is necessary, he hopes that she will neither resist it or those who are attempting to work with her. The concern is whether this is just a one off or a one more.”

Spears and Federline were married between 2004 and 2007. They share sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19.
