FKA twigs will star as Josephine Baker—the Franco-American dancer, singer, actress, and activist—in a forthcoming biopic helmed by French director Maïmouna Doucouré, Deadline reports. The film, originally announced in 2022, will reportedly begin shooting this fall.
“Josephine Baker’s extraordinary legacy is such an inspiration to me and to so many people around the world,” twigs said in a statement. “She lives on in our hearts as a visionary, ground-breaking woman whose story is as powerful as it is relevant today.”
An television series about Baker from A24, starring Janelle Monaé, was announced in 2022 but never materialized. twigs recently penned the original song “My Mouth Is Lonely for You” for Anne Hathaway’s pop star psychodrama Mother Mary. She’s currently set to appear alongside Chloë Sevigny, Sturgill Simpson and Bonnie “Prince” Billy in The Lonely Woman, a feature film directed by Boy Harsher.
