Harry Styles has jokingly revealed that he lost his virginity while listening to a Radiohead song.
The Aperture singer made the hilarious revelation while giving a speech in honour of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke at the Ivor Novello Awards in London on Thursday night.
Before Yorke was inducted into the Fellowship of The Ivors Academy, Styles gave a five-minute speech about Radiohead’s influence on his life and career.
In a key moment widely shared on social media, the former One Direction star shared a very personal anecdote about the first time he had sex.
“I lost my virginity to Talk Show Host,” he said of the 1996 song.
After pausing for laughter, he quipped, “I lost my virginity to the intro of Talk Show Host,” to which the crowd laughed and cheered.
Elsewhere in the speech, Styles heaped praise on “hero” Yorke, saying that the songwriter lives at the top of a “magical music mountain that we’re all attempting to climb”.
“I cannot overstate how his work has influenced my belief in the purpose of the arts in our world today, and I cannot overstate how much his work continues to influence me,” he continued, noting that his song Watermelon Sugar wouldn’t exist without Radiohead’s Exit Music.
“Imagine that… A world without that song,” he joked, as the crowd laughed.
The 32-year-old also pointed out that Radiohead’s debut album was released the year before he was born, but he discovered them “over time” thanks to his sister Gemma and his uncle Michael.
Styles recalled meeting Yorke for the first time while he was walking around Rome, Italy. He had “always been worried” that the musician might be mean, but he was “friendly” and “kind”, and the As It Was singer felt “overwhelmed” during their conversations.
“Now, it’s always nerve-wracking stepping onto a stage, but to know that a man I’ve spent so much of my life listening to is now listening to me talk to you about him is a truly terrifying honour,” he told the crowd, reports Billboard.
“It’s an honour to be here tonight to present Thom with this recognition of his enduring influence on British music. Radiohead is my favourite band. Thank you Thom forever.”
Styles attended the ceremony on a rare night off from his Together, Together world tour. He is currently in the middle of his 10-night residency at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and will perform again on Friday night.
