Jimi Hendrix Way To be officially dedicated in Greenwich Village ceremony

New York City will officially co-name West 8th Street as “Jimi Hendrix Way” on June 10 at 11 a.m., honoring the legendary guitarist and cultural icon. Led by NYC Council Member Harvey Epstein, the Greenwich Village ceremony takes place at the corner of Sixth Avenue and West 8th Street, situated just one block from the historic Electric Lady Studios which Hendrix famously founded. The public celebration was originally scheduled for February 24 but had to be postponed due to severe winter weather delays.

Spearheaded by the Hendrix family-owned company Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. and writer Jeff Slate, the street dedication will also double as the official launch of a major national educational partnership. The organization has teamed up with rocker Stevie Van Zandt’s TeachRock foundation to introduce a brand-new multimedia curriculum focused on Hendrix’s profound artistic legacy, specifically designed for middle and high school students across the country.

The public ceremony will feature a star-studded lineup of guest speakers, including TeachRock founder Stevie Van Zandt and Janie Hendrix, the President and CEO of Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. They will be joined by a host of musical luminaries, including Grammy-winning Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid, legendary songwriter Valerie Simpson, longtime David Letterman orchestra guitarist Felicia Collins, and acclaimed audio engineer Eddie Kramer, who worked intimately with Hendrix to build Electric Lady Studios. Local students and educators will also attend to mark the connection between the historic neighborhood and modern classrooms.

The newly launched lesson plan, titled “Jimi Hendrix: Rock’s Trailblazing Innovator and Influential Guitarist,” explores the musician’s journey from his early Blues and R&B roots to his revolutionary impact on sound design and live performance. Developed in partnership with NYU’s MusEdLab, the interactive curriculum utilizes exclusive archival footage from the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival and offers digital tools that allow students to experiment with Hendrix’s signature guitar effects. The standards-aligned educational resource is entirely free and available to teachers nationwide via the official TeachRock digital library.
