Céline Dion leads tributes to ‘wonderful’ Peabo Bryson

Céline Dion has paid an emotional tribute to her former collaborator, Peabo Bryson.

The legendary singer, born Robert Peapo Bryson, died in Marietta, Georgia on Tuesday, two days after suffering a stroke. He was 75.

Following the sad news, Céline took to Instagram to post a throwback photo of herself and Peabo on the red carpet at the 1993 American Music Awards.

The Canadian superstar and Bryson famously recorded the song Beauty and the Beast as a pop duet for the soundtrack of the 1991 Disney animated film of the same name.

“I’m heartbroken to hear that we lost Peabo Bryson today,” she began. “His incredible voice and his kind spirit embodied the beauty of song and performance. He was so wonderful and generous to me all those years ago, when we recorded Beauty and the Beast.”

Céline went on to recall how supportive the Grammy Award-winning artist was of her while she was a young artist.

“He made me so comfortable, as I was just learning to sing in English. He will remain for me always as a real symbol of the joy that music has brought to my life. His voice and talent will be missed… My heart is with your family, and may you rest in peace, Peabo. Love, Céline,” the 58-year-old added.

Elsewhere, American Idol winner Ruben Studdard posted a photo of himself and Bryson performing onstage together.

“Rest In Peace my Friend @peabobryson2. Thank you for all the great memories !!” he commented.

Meanwhile, actress Viola Davis lauded Bryson as “one of the last great crooners”.

“The voice that made us believe in love and softness… Your voice, songwriting expanded through generations… You and what you created will live on. Rest well. We will all speak your name, Mr. Peabo Bryson,” she praised.

Bryson is survived by his wife, Tanya Boniface, two children, and three grandchildren.
