Chris Lake, the Knicks, a Battle With the Weather & Renegade Stages in NYC: 5 Best Moments

Chris Lake landed in Brooklyn, New York’s Under the K Bridge on Friday (June 5) and Sunday (June 7). Lake often arrives in the city towards the start of the summer, kicking off the season for many New York ravers.

Ahead of his run of shows, Lake threw a party at PopUp Bagels in SoHo on Thursday (June 4). A fan had called Lake over to say, “Excuse me, you dropped something. The bass.” Lake, naturally, took the video to turn her vocals into his intro for both of his weekend shows.

While Lake initially planned to perform three shows, day two on Saturday (June 6) was among the numerous shows in New York forced to cancel due to severe weather with 60 m.p.h. winds, rain, thunder, and lighting. The Governor’s Ball Festival was forced to cancel performances by Blood Orange (who managed to return on Sunday), Amyl and the Sniffers and Kali Uchis, while Bright Eyes also had to cancel their show at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. Despite the disappointment stemming from a show cancellation, fans and Lake all came back ready to groove on Sunday. Those who held Saturday tickets were transferred over to Sunday if they wanted, while refunds for those unable to attend the Sunday show are available from June 8-14 via AXS or at the original point of purchase.

To accommodate the extra fans, Lake’s team and promoter Bowery Presents (a subsidiary of AEG Presents) opened up a second stage down by Newtown Creek, curated by pop-up promotion company Renegade, allowing them to bump up the capacity from Sunday’s expected 4,000 to just under 7,000, according to representatives for the show.

As the sun set on Sunday, Lake made a triumphant return. Below, find the five best moments from Lake’s New York City weekend.

Billboard VIP Pass

  • The NY Knicks Won Game 2 of the NBA Finals

For fans already excited about the Knicks entering the NBA finals for the first time in 27 years, having the opportunity to watch the last moments of Game 2 of the series at a rave became the opportunity of a lifetime. Lake streamed the game on the screen behind him, allowing all 8,500 fans in the crowd to experience their team winning the game. Donning a customized Knicks jersey, Lake dropped a remix of Fred again..’s “Victory Lap” right as the Knicks won, declaring “Knicks in four!”

  • Mayor Mamdani Extended Night One’s Curfew 30-Minutes Following the Knicks’ Win

After the Knicks took home a victory, the mayor’s office called to say the venue’s curfew was extended an extra 30 minutes, allowing fans to dance until 12:30 a.m. On Sunday, Lake’s team and the promotion company also extended set times from 9:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Night Two Cancelled Due to a Storm, But Lake Clapped Back Online

While the second show was cancelled due to high winds, heavy rains, thunder and lighting, Lake responded to a fan question on Instagram about why the show had to be cancelled and posted the exchange to his Instagram story. He detailed the impact of the storms’ high winds, explaining the property damage that can take place and how it can be dangerous for those out and about.

“Electronic event production rigged under a bridge can be expected to fail, fall, be ripped apart, and any people around it could be seriously injured or worse — killed,” Lake wrote. “Anyhow, it was a hard decision, and a costly one for me. My team. And the local promoters. But we felt it was most important that you or anyone else didn’t die last night at the show.”

  • Ayybo & Tiga Went Back-to-Back

While Ayybo was slated to serve as Lake’s opener on Saturday, the DJ appeared on Sunday for a back-to-back with Tiga (who originally held the Sunday slot), allowing fans to not miss both.

  • Sunday’s Expanded Capacity Featured a Second Stage

While Saturday’s original show was slated to have a second stage curated by pop-up promoter Renegade, Lake’s team and Bowery Presents allowed the stage to take place on Sunday instead. Nestled in front of the nearby Newtown Creek, the stage appeared as a mini amphitheater and featured sets from Lauren Flax back-to-back Mike Servito, Zillions back-to-back Annabelle and more.
