Wannabe turns 30: Spice Girls celebrate the song that ‘changed our lives’

The Spice Girls have casually marked the 30th anniversary of their debut single Wannabe – the song that “changed” their “lives”.

The iconic girl group – Mel B (Scary), Emma Bunton (Baby), Geri Horner (Ginger), Melanie C (Sport) and Victoria Beckham (Posh) – didn’t manage to pull off a tour to mark the milestone but there is no doubt it holds a special place in their history.

The official Spice Girls Instagram accounted posted alongside the music video on Wednesday (08.07.26): “30 years of Wannabe!

“Happy birthday to the song that changed our lives forever. Thank you for making it part of your lives for the past three decades.”

Melanie C marked the occasion on Instagram, writing: “30 years of girl power! Happy Birthday Wannabe.

“I love you @emmaleebunton @victoriabeckham @officialmelb @gerihalliwellhorner @biffco and Matt Rowe

“The song that changed our lives forever.”

Emma Bunton posted: “Happy birthday Wannabe, 30 years! Love you all thank you! (sic)”

Mel B simply wrote: “Zigazig ahhhh. Yipppeeee. (sic)”

Upon its release on July 8, 1996, the Girl Power anthem spent seven weeks at number one in the UK and topped the charts in 37 countries.

Although there are no plans to mark the occasion with a tour, Melanie says the girls have discussed some “great opportunities” for activities outside of the milestone.

She told The Louis Theroux podcast: “We don’t have them (meetings) often enough because it’s still a business.

“You know, there are still things we have to take care of. You know? We have our trademark, and we have lots of great merchandise out there, of course. This year’s a big anniversary.”

When asked about the anniversary, she insisted “nothing is in the works”.

She said: “We want to. Everything is in discussion. But it’s a really positive time for us.

“We’ll see. There’s nothing in the works, so it’s obviously not going to be anything in time for the anniversary. But we are discussing lots of great opportunities.”

Melanie says she’ll always be a Spice Girl and all five of them will be included in everything they do – even Victoria who sat out their last reunion tour in 2019.

She said: “No one’s left.

“I love it. When I’m doing shows and stuff, and if people want to introduce me, when they say former Spice Girl, I’m really offended.

“Because once a Spice Girl, always a Spice Girl. I think we all feel like that. There might be times we choose not to work in that arena, but we’re still Spice Girls.”
