Some three weeks after sharing an album called Standing on the Corner: II, Standing on the Corner have announced SOTC (“II”), an album that is… similar but not the same, apparently. The original record, still on YouTube following its surprise drop on the platform last month, featured cameos from Danny Brown, Styles P, and poet Sonia Sanchez, as Matthew Ritchie noted in Pitchfork’s review. Most of them are listed as collaborators on SOTC (“II”); Solange is newly credited, too. The album is out September 11 via XL. (The label declined to elaborate on differences between the records.) Listen to the single “Mr. Postman, Wait!” below.
The YouTube upload was, Ritchie noted, a typically sample-heavy affair from the Brooklyn collective; a banal but reasonable assumption is that the confusing circumstances of the new release result from simple sample clearance issues. Bandleader Gio Escobar and his collaborators also enlisted the Warlockettes, Ladybug Mecca, Bubba Dupree, and Claudette Ortiz for the record. Check out the tracklist below.
An “SOTC communiqué” in the press release reads, “For 8 years, I promised not to be angry either way it shook because I truly did believe. And to die would have been a sucker’s dream, but this is a skull game chump and the past cannot help no man. To the hustlers of the world, if it is all luck, then it’s got to end one day. It’s ended…”
