Metal band Mutoid Man call out the official 2026 FIFA World Cup theme song for sounding “familiar” to one of theirs

Mutoid Man have called out the official FIFA World Cup 2026 anthem for sounding “familiar” to one of their own songs.

The heavy metal supergroup, featuring Cave In’s Stephen Brodsky, Converge’s Ben Koller and High On Fire’s Jeff Matz, shared a post on Instagram on July 3, pointing fans towards what they saw as a similarity between FIFA’s new anthem and their 2023 track ‘Call Of The Void’.

Posting an image of the FIFA World Cup 2026 logo with “Official Theme” written underneath, the band wrote: “Hey @fifaworldcup that vocal line sure sounds familiar. #goalofthevoid.”

The hashtag is a nod to ‘Call Of The Void’, the opening track from Mutoid Man’s 2023 album ‘Mutants’, and the song in question appears to be ‘DNA’, the Official FIFA World Cup 2026 Anthem, performed by Andrea Bocelli, David Guetta, Megan Thee Stallion and EJAE.

Check out the post and both songs below.

Mutoid Man stopped short of making a direct allegation of plagiarism, and neither FIFA nor the artists behind ‘DNA’ appear to have publicly responded at the time of writing.

‘DNA’ was released on June 10 and performed by Bocelli and EJAE at the World Cup opening ceremony in Mexico City the following day. FIFA have described the track as “the ceremonial and emotional signature of the tournament”, saying it was intended to reflect the identity, unity and belonging of the competition.

Shakira and Burna Boy also helped open the tournament at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium last month with a performance of ‘Dai Dai’, another of the tournament’s official songs. The track marked Shakira’s third official World Cup song, following 2010’s ‘Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)’ and 2014’s ‘Dare (La La La)’.

The Colombian star is also set to perform at the first ever FIFA World Cup final halftime show on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The 11-minute show, curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, will also feature Madonna, BTS, Justin Bieber, and characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets. It will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which is aiming to raise $100million to expand children’s access to education and football around the world.

Mutoid Man, meanwhile, released ‘Mutants’ in 2023 as the follow-up to 2017’s ‘War Moans’.
