Lorde slams Spotify’s AI feature for spreading ‘inaccurate’ claims about her tour

Lorde has hit out at Spotify’s AI-generated About the Song feature.

The AI inaccurately said the New Zealand pop star had water poured over her and removed clothing while performing Current Affairs on her 2025 Ultrasound World Tour, but it was actually during the song GRWM.

Lorde has called on the streaming giant to allow artists to opt out of the beta feature.

She wrote on her Instagram Stories: “Not only is this inaccurate (not the song I did that in) but reducing a song to an AI-generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation IMO.

“At least make it possible for artists to opt out please.”

Spotify has defended its use of AI and said they are usually “fast to fix” any errors made.

The company responded with the following statement shared with Pitchfork: “We built ‘About the Song’ because fans want to dig into the stories behind the music. It’s still in beta. The info comes from articles across the internet, and when something’s off, we move fast to fix it, like we did here. Getting it right matters to us.”

Like many artists, Lorde has been vocal about her disapproval of AI in the arts.

During her recent set at Madrid’s Mad Cool Festival, she took aim at Meta’s AI glasses, telling the crowd: “Increasingly, in our world, it gets harder and harder to know what is real.

“Can I just say, for the record, f*** the glasses. Don’t get the glasses. Not sexy.”

Recently, SZA fumed that she was furious after finding out more than 200 of her songs were used to train AI – potentially including “unreleased” material.

The Kill Bill hitmaker has been an outspoken critic of the tech – which is taking over most industries – and branded anyone supporting artificial intelligence “disgusting”.

She posted to her Instagram Stories: “[Just] checked and music AI has trained off 238 of my songs. I’m certain some unreleased. If you’re a musician and you support this degenerate s***? You’re disgusting and there’s NOTHING YOU COULD EVER SAY TO ME TO MAKE THIS OKAY. I hope u have the life u deserve. (sic)”
