Lil Wayne reveals how he recorded music during prison stint

Lil Wayne recorded music during an eight-month prison sentence in 2010.

The 43-year-old rap star was incarcerated at Rikers Island in New York on weapon possession charges in 2010 – but that didn’t stop Wayne from making music.

During an appearance on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, he shared: “I went to the studio every night in jail.”

Wayne subsequently clarified that he recorded new music using his phone while he was behind bars.

He said: “In my cell. That meant everybody be quiet. I’m about to beat on this damn table.”

Wayne explained that he needed the cooperation of the other inmates in order to record.

He explained: “I would do it on purpose … That’s why everyone’s gotta lock in. It was just me on the phone and [that way] I can actually record.”

Although Wayne hated his time behind bars, he did benefit from a special arrangement.

The rapper – who was first arrested on weapon possession charges in 2007 – said: “I have to give all of that thanks and credit to the people that were around me in there. They made it their job to make it easy for me.”

Last year, meanwhile, Wayne announced that he will never play a Super Bowl Halftime Show, after repeatedly being overlooked for the role.

The rap star also claimed that he’s refused to network with some leading industry figures in order to land the gig.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Wayne explained: “If you notice, I was a part of things I’ve never been a part of. Like [Michael] Rubin’s all-white parties. I’m doing s*** with Tom Brady. That was all for that. You ain’t never seen me in them types of venues. I ain’t Drake. I ain’t out there smiling like that everywhere. I’m in the stu’, smokin’ and recording.”

Wayne also claimed that the NFL apologised to him directly after he was overlooked for the Halftime Show in favour of Kendrick Lamar. However, he noted that the NFL aren’t ultimately in charge of selecting the performer, either.

The Go D.J. hitmaker – who is one of the best-selling rappers of all time – said: “All of a sudden, according to them, they got curved. So, I’m going to have to just settle with whatever they say.”
