Oasis’ (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? crowned the UK’s biggest studio album of all time

Oasis have achieved another milestone with their 1995 classic (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? being declared the UK’s biggest studio album of all time.

The announcement arrives as part of the Official Albums Chart’s 70th-anniversary celebrations, marking seven decades of the records that have defined British listening habits.

The band’s era-shaping second album sits at Number Three on the all-time list of biggest albums overall – behind Queen’s Greatest Hits and ABBA’s Gold: Greatest Hits – but takes the crown as the highest-ranking studio LP. According to the Official Charts Company, Morning Glory has accumulated 6.2 million UK chart units, boosted by a fresh wave of streams following Oasis’ massive Live ’25 reunion tour last summer.

The rest of the Top 10 spans generations of icons, including Adele’s 21 (Number Four), Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (Number Six), Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon (Number Seven) and Michael Jackson’s Thriller (Number Eight). Oasis’ debut album Definitely Maybe also makes the cut, landing at Number 39 on the all-time rundown.

Becca Monahan and Chris Austin, interim Co-Managing Directors at the Official Charts, praised the achievement, saying: “Huge congratulations to Oasis, as the incomparable ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ is officially crowned the UK’s biggest studio album of all time. Three decades on, its scale and influence remain extraordinary – a defining British record that continues to unite generations, fill stadiums and soundtrack lives.”

They added that the chart’s anniversary offers a moment to reflect on the album’s cultural weight: “Celebrating 70 years of the Official Albums Chart offers a unique opportunity to honour the album’s enduring place at the heart of music culture. The way fans discover and enjoy music may be ever-changing, but the album remains the ultimate expression of an artist’s creativity, ambition and vision.”

In a further tribute to the records that shaped the nation, they said: “For seven decades, the chart has captured the records that seize the public imagination – making the achievements of every artist on this list a fitting centrepiece to this landmark anniversary.”
