DIIV announce new A. G. Cook-produced album ‘ZIRP!’ via cryptic hotline

DIIV have announced a new A. G. Cook produced album, ‘ZIRP!’, sharing the news with a cryptic hotline sent out to some fans.

Set to arrive on October 30, news of the record came with no advance singles or press announcements, and the band instead made the reveal by sharing a pre-save link – which you can find here – on Instagram over the weekend.

Cook also re-shared a teaser on his own stories, while some fans received physical business cards in the post containing a QR code leading to DIIV’s website, as well as a phone number.

According to Stereogum, if you call the number, you’re met with old school telemarketer-style messaging that promises the new album will be “the future of alternative multimedia entertainment”. Adopting the language of a pushy start-up, there’s also talk of the way it will “challenge assumptions,” “create entire new categories,” and “think on a global scale”.

The collaboration arrives at a moment when Cook’s career is booming. The producer has had a hand in several major projects this year, working alongside Charli XCX for the soundtrack of A24 film and pop mockumentary The Moment, and later on recently dropped seventh studio album ‘Music, Fashion, Film‘, which features a tribute to him on ‘Magic Metal Montana’.

As for DIIV, the upcoming record will mark the follow up to their fourth studio album, ‘Frog In Boiling Water‘. In a three-star review of the LP, NME shared: “A quiet, undemanding and opaque album, ‘Frog In Boiling Water’ will appeal to a section of shoegaze fans that are keen to surrender to its impressionistic, seemingly-timeless charms. Others may ask themselves: why does it feel a bit like we’re living the same day over and over again?”

Opening up to NME about why recording the album was particularly tough, Colin Caulfield shared: “It’s particularly funny to answer this question with you, because last time we did an interview with NME, I remember it being so positive, like, ‘We’re doing the best we’ve ever done.’ And it was true at the time, it felt like this rebirth for the band.”

He continued: “There was so much optimism and hope and with this one, I think we went into it with these really big ambitions to try to make a different kind of album and really stretch and push ourselves to make something new.

“And I think we just did not anticipate that it would be a really, really big challenge to agree with those new guidelines, or that kind of exploded approach to the band. We were still, in a certain way, in that mode of, ‘Everything’s good,’ and then that’s when things really sneak up. You’re not expecting it. And then resentments build…”
