Ariana Grande has said that her upcoming album ‘Petal’ was written from a place of “unfiltered rage”.
The singer is preparing to release her eighth studio album tomorrow (July 31) via Republic Records, featuring the lead single ‘Hate That I Made You Love Me’. Pre-order the album here.
The pop star discussed the creation of the record in a preview of a new Apple Music interview, filmed on the bedroom set used during her ongoing ‘Eternal Sunshine’ tour.
Asked which of the album’s 12 songs she was most excited for fans to hear, Grande said she was unable to choose one.
“I’m equally excited to see how they react to every single song,” she explained. “It pulls from many different parts of myself and yet, at the same time, it is very experimental and different for me.”
“I wrote from a place that I don’t usually, which was like an unfiltered rage that I think we all feel sometimes.”
Grande continued: “I usually am too shy to tap into that. This time, I didn’t filter as much as I usually do. I usually do a lot of rewrites and make things a little kinder. This time, I didn’t.”

Grande had previously hinted at the album’s more confrontational tone when she announced it earlier this year.
“It’s a little feral,” she said in May. “It’s definitely from a place I’ve been maybe too shy or polite to tap into before. This kind of just feels like, ‘Fuck it’.”
The singer has also described ‘Petal’ as being “full of life” and “growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging”.
Last month, Grande revealed the album’s full tracklist during a show at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. Other song titles include ‘Kiss Me’, ‘Stay’, ‘Big Feelings’, ‘Freak’, ‘Never Get Over Me’ and ‘Nowhere, Nobody’.
The ‘Eternal Sunshine’ tour began in Oakland last month, marking Grande’s first full headline concert since 2019. She will begin a 10-night residency at London’s O2 Arena in August – find any remaining tickets here.
Earlier this month, Ty Dolla $ign joined Grande during a Brooklyn show for a surprise performance of ‘Safety Net’, their collaboration from her 2020 album ‘Positions’.
Grande also recently launched the Brighter Days Ahead Foundation, which will provide grants to organisations supporting LGBTQ+ people, including access to mental health services.
She previously hit out at the White House after her song ‘Bye’ was used in a video showing ICE agents arresting and handcuffing people. “Do not use my music to promote your barbaric, inhumane, heinous nonsense,” she said.
Alongside her return to music, Grande is due to appear in the comedy sequel Focker-In-Law with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro. She will also make her West End debut opposite Jonathan Bailey in Sunday In The Park With George in 2027.
