Buffalo Traffic Jam are adapting to overnight success on the fly. The Montana duo are country music’s most recent — and arguably most striking — example of the power of streaming and social media’s ability to create a career. Barely two years ago, the group’s core members were set to graduate college and enter fields that had nothing to do with music. Since then, their stripped-down folk sound, not as country as Zach Bryan and not as pop as Noah Kahan, has gained mass appeal, and they’ve been selling out shows at every turn.
Now they just have to figure out what to do next.
On Friday, the duo of Nathan Ross and Frankie Cassidy, release their debut album, Pictures of You, via Arista Records. It’s a 14-track snapshot of two college friends from Big Sky Country who suddenly find themselves in demand wherever they play.
“We decided around October last year that the next step for us was going to be our debut album,” Cassidy tells Rolling Stone. “We were on the road opening for Dylan Gossett in Kansas City, and I got a call that my grandma unexpectedly passed away. I went back home to be with my family, and we were looking through these old photos of her. In a way, those pictures told her life story. After that, I had written the title track, ‘Pictures of You.’”
Cassidy took it to Ross and they came up with a concept for an album: a record that converts their admittedly surreal life experiences over the last year into a universal tale of perseverance. What they emerged with was a surprisingly emotional debut LP. Love — the kind that’s easy to lose when in your early 20s, like Buffalo Traffic Jam and the majority of their fans — is a recurring theme.
The band’s signature tune, “Fool’s Gold,” is on the album, too. Since releasing the song in October 2025, “Fool’s Gold” has given Buffalo Traffic Jam their greatest jump. Cassidy’s commanding vocals and the fast folk tempo, along with lyrics like, “Love is kind, love’s not fair/not your choice if you care/ I’m down on hope,” resonated immediately with their college-aged fans. It’s become the band’s most-streamed song online and the crescendo of Buffalo Traffic Jam concerts.
As live music finds itself in an era marked by flailing ticket sales — artists from Post Malone to Kacey Musgraves have recently canceled some shows — Buffalo Traffic Jam are proving to be something of a sure bet in the venues they play. Dean Edington, who manages Liberty Hall, a historic rock room in Lawrence, Kansas, saw the band open for another artist at his club in fall 2024 and nearly upstage the headliner. “Real watershed moment at the Hall that night,” Edington says. “You know it’s not my main jam, but it felt the same as watching Mastodon at a record store in 2000, like, these guys are going somewhere.” (Buffalo Traffic Jam will return to headline Liberty Hall next month.)
Last March, the band played to a capacity crowd of 250 at New York’s Mercury Lounge. Just over six months later, Ross and Cassidy return to the city for two sold-out nights at the 1,025-capacity Irving Plaza ballroom. A 700-percent increase in crowd size in a six-month span, even if spread over two nights, is no small feat. Of the 54 dates the band has confirmed between Aug. 1 and April — including a European tour in early spring — 25 are already sold out.
Pat Fielder, a senior talent buyer for the independent promotion outfit Mammoth Live, booked Buffalo Traffic Jam for that 2024 Liberty Hall show. This year, he booked them into their first arena show ahead of Charles Wesley Godwin and Turnpike Troubadours in Boise.
“It felt like all of the pieces to the puzzle had come together,” he says of the band’s arena debut. “I remember saying, ‘There isn’t going to be a ticket left to see these guys by the end of the year,’ and I’m almost positive that’s already the case.”
Ross and Cassidy spent large swaths of 2025 opening for Gossett, whose own rise to stardom is as close as Buffalo Traffic Jam will get to a blueprint. They studied the Texan’s interactions with fans and how he engaged rooms between songs, and asked Gossett what they can expect as they continue to grow as a band.
The biggest lesson? That a high-energy crowd can help an artist overcome nearly any issue that may arise.
“We just played our biggest headlining show yet, and that was one of the best stateside crowds we have ever had. But on our side, it was pretty sloppy musically,” Cassidy says. “I had a couple of mess-ups and forgot some lyrics, but when the crowd is that excited to be there, you forget all that.”
