Lindsey Buckingham’s Alleged Stalker Ruled ‘Not Trial-Competent’ After Mental-Health Exam

The woman charged with stalking Lindsey Buckingham after claiming the former Fleetwood Mac guitarist is her father was found incompetent to stand trial Thursday.

“At this time, the court finds that you are not able to handle your case. You are not trial-competent,” Los Angeles County Mental Health Court Judge Robert S. Harrison told Michelle Dick during a morning hearing. The judge said he also found that it was “medically appropriate to treat the defendant’s psychiatric condition with medication.” He made his rulings after receiving a report from a court-appointed doctor who examined Dick in custody.

Dick, wearing a yellow-and-blue jail uniform and waist restraints, sat in the courtroom as the judge scheduled an Aug. 27 hearing to determine what happens next. The court is expected to consider whether attempting to restore Dick to competency would be in the interest of justice or whether she qualifies for a mental-health diversion program, which could lead to dismissal of the charges if she completes it successfully.

Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged Dick, 55, with six felonies and a misdemeanor after she allegedly assaulted Buckingham with a motor vehicle and hurled an unidentified substance at him amid a purported yearslong stalking campaign. Dick was arrested in Indiana in April after she allegedly confronted the famed musician in Santa Monica, California, on March 25, despite a restraining order barring contact.

Dick pleaded not guilty to her seven charges on May 6 after authorities transported her back to California. In an amended complaint, prosecutors claimed Dick repeatedly followed and made unwanted contact with Buckingham between Oct. 9, 2021, and March 25, 2026. Prosecutors say Dick assaulted Buckingham with the motor vehicle on March 19. They say she also vandalized Buckingham’s Mercedes-Benz S450 the same day, allegedly defacing the luxury car “with graffiti and other inscribed material.”

During the alleged incident on March 25, Dick purportedly tracked Buckingham to his location in Santa Monica and threw a substance at the 76-year-old musician before fleeing. A law-enforcement source told Rolling Stone it wasn’t immediately clear if the substance was caustic. Buckingham was not injured.

Editor’s picks

Buckingham first sought a restraining order against Dick in November 2024, accusing her of “swatting” his home. Court filings allege Dick called 911 that month and falsely reported that shots had been fired at the family’s Brentwood residence, prompting a large police response.

A judge granted the restraining order in December 2024, requiring Dick to stay at least 100 yards from Buckingham, his wife, and his son for five years. She was also ordered to avoid their homes and vehicles and was barred from contacting them.

Buckingham wrote in court filings that police stopped and questioned Dick after one alleged incident and recorded the encounter on a body-worn camera. “She began rambling about me being her father and suffocating her as a child,” he wrote.

A representative for Buckingham did not respond to a request for comment from Rolling Stone.

Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974 with Stevie Nicks, his partner in the folk-rock duo Buckingham Nicks. He wrote and sang several of the band’s best-known songs, including “Go Your Own Way.” He left the group in 2018 after a reported dispute over the timing of a world tour.
