Wyclef Jean has sparked hopes for a new Fugees album after he revealed he’s in an “amazing place” with bandmate Lauryn Hill.
The group hasn’t released a studio album since 1996’s The Score, which produced hits including Ready or Not, Fu-Gee-La and Killing Me Softly.
Hill and Jean have now reunited to perform at Diaspora Calling!, a one-day festival making its UK debut at The National Bowl in Milton Keynes today. The festival also marks the 30th anniversary of the release of The Score.
Although the musicians wouldn’t confirm if a new album was on the cards, Jean told the BBC he’s happy to be back performing with Hill.
“All I can tell you is, man, we’re in God’s hands,” he revealed. “I’m back with my bandmate!”
“So we’re in an amazing place. I think the energy is very important,” the star added.
When asked about the possibility of new material, Hill replied, “Absolutely.”
Pras Michel, the third member of the band, is currently serving a 14-year sentence in a U.S. prison for charges including money laundering and illegal lobbying.
As Jean reflected on the success of The Score, he insisted the themes from the tracks remain just as relevant today.
“When you talk about the idea of refugees, look where we are today. We were saying these things 30 years ago. It was never just about us – it was always about the movement,” he added.
Diaspora Calling!, hosted by Dave Chappelle, will also feature performances from Erykah Badu, Giggs, Fireboy DML, YG Marley and Zion Marley.
