Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson shares new ‘Moana’ ballad ‘Your Dad’, teases return to music with “old school soul” and country music

Dwayne Johnson has debuted a new song from a Moana-inspired album, as well as revealing that he would consider a return to music.

The Hollywood superstar debuted ‘Your Dad’, the sweet ballad from ‘Moana: Voices Across The Ocean’, a companion album to the live action remake of Disney’s Moana that was released this year.

The song was co-written with 2023 American Idol winner Iam Tongi, and you can listen to it below.

While discussing the new track with Rolling Stone, Johnson revealed that he was “exploring” the idea of developing a music career. Having reached the top of two businesses, professional wrestling and Hollywood, he has been mulling over a recording career after experiencing success in the past.

In 2000, he featured with Wyclef Jean as his wrestling persona, The Rock, on the single ‘It Doesn’t Matter’, which peaked at number three in the UK singles chart. In 2021, he rapped on the track ‘Face Off’, which featured Tech N9ne, Joey Cool and King Iso.

He is perhaps best known for ‘Your Welcome’, the song written by Lin Manuel Miranda for the original animated version of Moana. That film’s soundtrack album reached number seven in the UK, and number two on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Discussing his future in music, he told Rolling Stone: “I’m exploring that now… As you roll along in life, I’ve been real fortunate to be part of some really cool projects, and love it. But music has always been such an anchor for me, and very specifically in genres that I love, like country music, traditional country music. And we’re exploring that now.”

As to what genre he could work in, he said: “Maybe something in just the old-school soul genre, with some country flavor. I love old-school soul. Sam Cooke. From Sam Cooke, again, to Merle Haggard. That’s how I grew up. And those were my strong influences from my dad.

“My dad was a pro wrestler, and we lived on the road, and I lived in the backseat of the car, because we just drove. And every night a different city. And so that’s all he would listen to. So my thought is, ‘Oh, man, I wanna go and write and sing and explore the things that I love.’”

Recently, Dwayne Johnson offered a philosophical response to the poor reception for the recent Moana live-action remake, saying simply: “That’s just the way it goes”.
