Roxy Music dig up lost tapes and unheard demos for massive For Your Pleasure reissue

Roxy Music are cracking open the vaults for a huge reissue of their era-defining second album For Your Pleasure, arriving November 6.

The band are celebrating more than 50 years since the 1973 release with a new edition loaded with unheard demos, home tapes, studio outtakes and rare performances.

The album, released on March 23, 1973, cemented the group as one of Britain’s most daring art-rock outfits. Now fans are getting a closer look at how Bryan Ferry, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay, Brian Eno and Paul Thompson built the follow-up to their breakthrough debut.

Bryan Ferry says the pressure of making the second album pushed him into overdrive.

He explained: “It was a good pressure. Realising, now there’s an audience to write for. An intelligent audience. I felt a responsibility for the work that I hadn’t for the first album, certainly with regard to the lyrics.”

Ferry revealed he escaped to a remote cottage in Derbyshire to write the songs.

He said: “I was completely alone out there, and just really focused on writing this stuff. I remember sheets of paper all over the floor, working on things like In Every Dream Home A Heartache and Editions Of You. Those few days in that cottage were crucial to the making of For Your Pleasure.”

Those fragile cassettes – recorded in the cottage and in Ferry’s London flat – have survived and will be released for the first time. Fans can already hear Grey Lagoons – 1971 Demo, an early recording featuring Ferry, Andy Mackay, Brian Eno, Graham Simpson and Roger Bunn. Two more unheard versions, an AIR Studios outtake and a 1973 Montreux live cut, also appear in the set.

The reissue arrives in multiple formats, including 2LP, 2CD, Blu-Ray, Dolby Atmos and a 3CD+1DVD Super Deluxe Edition featuring 20 unheard songwriting sketches, rehearsals, studio outtakes, 14 previously unreleased live and instrumental tracks, and a 116-page book of rare photos, lyric notes and archive material.

Nick de Ville, who helped shape Roxy Music’s iconic visuals, remembers the original album shoot, saying: “Bryan in chauffeur’s uniform, Amanda Lear as femme fatale, a Cadillac de Ville, and an empty car showroom in Marylebone. Good pros (and inspired amateurs) always see their way through, and so it was on this shoot.”

The For Your Pleasure 2026 edition is available to pre-order now.
