Johnny Marr has said that Noel Gallagher is currently “writing songs for fun” – although it isn’t clear whether or not it could be new Oasis material.
The singer, guitarist and former Smiths member made the comments during a new interview with Absolute Radio, where he was asked whether he had seen his friend, collaborator and Britpop legend recently.
“Yeah, I see him all the time,” he replied. “[He’s the] same as always, brilliant. He’s writing songs for fun, recording songs, enjoying himself, sending me hilarious WhatsApp’s — usually about Manchester United and lots and lots of effects pedals. [That] is the way our relationship has gone for 30 odd years now.”
While Marr didn’t shed any further detail on what kind of music Gallagher was working on, the comments align with what Noel shared with talkSPORT back in February that he was “in the studio now”.
Before then, he also got fans talking when he said he was “back at work” following a break over Christmas, and in spring 2025 Stereophonics’ Kelly Jones revealed that the guitarist had “been doing some writing in the studio”, sharing: “I’m assuming he’s doing some writing for either his stuff or if they’re [Oasis] gonna bring out a couple songs, I don’t know.”
It isn’t clear whether the music is for a brand new Oasis project – which would be their first new music since 2008’s ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ – a follow-up to his latest High Flying Birds album, or something else.
The last album from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds was 2023’s ‘Council Skies’, which featured Marr on three songs: ‘Pretty Boy’, ‘Open The Door, See What You Find’ and ‘I’m Not Giving Up Tonight’.
Fans have been speculating over a potential new Oasis single or album since the ’90s veterans announced in 2024 that they had reunited, and returned to the stage for their huge ‘Live ‘25’ tour last year.
In 2024, shortly after news of the return, Liam Gallagher got fans talking when he said that he and Noel had a new album on the way that was “already finished”. He then stirred the pot again later that year by saying that he was “blown away” by the music his new brother was working on for the record.
That November, he admitted that he was trolling fans with the comments, sharing that there is “no Oasis album in the making” and adding: “I was fucking joking… and the reason being because everyone is a little uptight these days. I’m sorry if I have upset anyone but fuck me it was a laugh.”

Despite that, he then fanned flames again in 2025 after band’s manager Alex McKinlay said in an interview that there were definitely “no plans for any new music”. Shortly after those comments, Liam wrote that “the only people making any kind of decisions on the future of OASIS will be ME n RKID [Noel]” and jokingly dismissed McKinlay as being their “accountant”.
Last month, though, Liam seemed to dismiss the idea of new material again, and revealed that they were not motivated to work on any new Oasis music as the immense pressure felt off-putting.
When a fan reached out and said “Oasis new album please please please, I’m sorry but I think the new album will actually change lives,” the iconic frontman gave the blunt response: “NO I’m just not prepared for the criticism if it doesn’t sell 100 million copies in the first hour, cure bad breath and constipation for the nation, if it doesn’t turn back time for Cher and some other shit. Let’s just do some gigs and be happy, thank you.”
Although hopes of a new Oasis album seem unlikely, it does look like Oasis are planning for tour dates for 2027.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, there is speculation that a 2027 UK and European tour is about to be announced, which could include an impressive 12-night homecoming residency at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium – home of Liam and Noel’s beloved Manchester City FC – and a return to Knebworth.
If residency shows in Manchester are confirmed, it seems likely that dates would take place in May and June, as Man City’s fixture list for 2026/2027 means that their last home game is on Saturday May 23.
As for Knebworth, there have been rumours of a return to the Hertfordshire space circulating since 2025 too – dating back to when a British peer stood up in the House of Lords’ upper house last year and claimed that Liam and Noel Gallagher would be playing five, back-to-back anniversary gigs there in 2026. She would later backtrack on the comments.
Next month, Oasis are set to release a new Steven Knight-directed documentary, which centres around their ‘Live ‘25’ comeback tour.
The first teaser dropped earlier this summer, and the full trailer arrived last week as tickets for cinema screenings went on sale. Don’t Look Back In Anger will be released in cinemas and on IMAX on September 11, before becoming available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu around the world at a later date in 2026.
