A supergroup featuring members of Green Day, Blink-182, Rancid and Ramones performed an official 50th anniversary Ramones tribute show in Los Angeles. Watch below.
The Cretin Family formed specially for the performance, with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and former Ramones bassist CJ Ramone joining forces for the celebration.
The group came together last night (August 30) for the first time at The Official Ramones 50th Anniversary Tribute, which took place at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.
It marked 50 years since the release of Ramones’ self-titled 1976 debut album, the record that helped ignite the punk revolution with songs including ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’, ‘Judy Is A Punk’ and ‘Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue’.
As well as the previously announced line-up, the gig saw appearances from some surprise guests, including Fred Armisen, who joined for ‘Danny Says’, Jason Freese who came out during ‘Do You Remember Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio?’ and The Linda Lindas, who joined for ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’ and a cover of Joe Jones’ ‘California Sun’.
As the show came to an end, Billy Idol came out as the final surprise act, performing ‘Beat on the Brat’, ‘Ready Steady Go’ by Generation X and the show closer ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’.
The entire set was introduced by John Travolta, with the event also including a double feature screening of the 50th anniversary deluxe edition of Carrie and Travolta’s new film Propeller One-Way Night Coach.
While on stage, Armstrong told the crowd it was the “first time in my entire life” he had performed with Barker. “And I actually get to play with the goddamn Ramone,” he continued, introducing CJ.

Green Day and Rancid both have history with Ramones, having appeared on the 2003 tribute album ‘We’re A Happy Family: A Tribute To Ramones’. Green Day covered ‘Outsider’ for the record, while Rancid contributed a version of ‘Sheena Is A Punk Rocker’.
Armstrong also has a penchant for cover sets with his band The Coverups. They’re renowned for their chaotic shows where they put their spin on tracks by iconic artists such as Bowie and The Rolling Stones.
In 2018, they invited Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan to perform with them, and back in July they covered David Bowie with Iron Maiden‘s Bruce Dickinson, and dedicated a version of Nirvana’s ‘Drain You’ to the late L7 icon Jennifer Finch.
In other news, Green Day recently announced the soundtrack to their upcoming coming-of-age film Nimrods and shared a new track, ‘I’m Never Gonna R.I.P.’. Their latest album ‘Saviors’ arrived in 2024, with NME giving it a four-star review and describing it as “their best work since ‘American Idiot’”.
The trio spoke to NME at the BRITs 2024 about the LP landing at Number One in the UK. “I didn’t know what to expect, I mean, when you’ve been at it this long, you hope for the best,” Armstrong said. Drummer Tré Cool added: “That’s fucking amazing… It’s the best place to be at Number One in my opinion.”
