Lizzo ‘relieved’ after judge dismisses former stylist’s lawsuit

Lizzo has spoken out after a judge dismissed a lawsuit filed against her production company by a former stylist.

In September 2023, designer/wardrobe assistant Asha Daniels filed a harassment and discrimination lawsuit against the Truth Hurts singer and her production company, Big Grrrl Touring, among others, alleging that they had created “a sexualized, racially charged and illegal work environment”.

A judge later decided that Daniels couldn’t sue Lizzo or her tour manager Carlina Gugliotta as individuals, and on Tuesday, Judge Fernando Aenlle-Rocha delivered a summary judgment in favour of Big Grrrl Touring and dismissed Daniels’s complaint entirely.

Following the news, Lizzo – real name Melissa Jefferson – took to Instagram to share a video showing her standing solemnly in front of a camera while a text statement rolled on the screen.

“Today I am relieved to announce that I have won the case against me and my touring company Big Grrrl Touring,” the message began. “All the ridiculous claims by a wardrobe assistant who worked on tour for less than 3 weeks (including a claim they broke an acrylic nail) have been dismissed.”

Lizzo went on to note that the lawsuit had been “shocking” as she never expected to be sued by someone who “admittedly never met me”.

“I prayed for the truth to come out and thanks to my incredible lawyers, the truth has prevailed,” the 38-year-old added. “The truth matters more to me than anything, and I told y’all I will continue to fight every vicious claim that has been made against me and my businesses. I’m grateful to God and my team for another victory. I will continue to use my platform to spread positivity and light to the world.”

Meanwhile, Daniels’s lawyer, Ron Zambrano, issued a statement to Billboard in which he expressed his disappointment at the loss.

“In our view, the ruling appears to minimize evidence of a sexually charged work environment by assessing incidents too narrowly… rather than considering their cumulative impact,” he told the outlet. “We respectfully disagree with the Court’s approach and are considering appropriate next steps.”

A separate lawsuit filed by three former backup dancers against Lizzo, her production company, and dance captain Shirlene Quigley, is still pending.
