Art Garfunkel says Donald Trump and global warming are making him want to “leave” America

Art Garfunkel has admitted that he is considering “leaving America” due to global warming and Donald Trump.

Speaking in a new interview with The Guardian, Garfunkel expressed his dismay over the current administration in the United States under President Trump.

“I don’t like America’s position at all. I’m not aboard, and I’m thinking of leaving the country, frankly. It’s real that the planet is getting warmer, that the water’s rising, that so many people are starving,” he said.

“When Donald Trump took over Venezuela, are those the new rules? Just take over a country and run it? It’s shocking, and you think: how on earth are we gonna change the presidency?”

His comments come eight months after US forces captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in Caracas and brought him to the United States to face federal charges.

Despite Garfunkel’s pessimism he added: “Trump won’t last forever. So we’ve got to hope.”

Garfunkel is not the only celebrity who has threatened to quit the US because of Trump.

Previously, Avatar director James Cameron said he was “sickened” by Trump’s re-election in 2024 and admitted the he was happy his New Zealand citizenship was “imminent”.

“I see a turn away from everything decent,” he said at the time. “America doesn’t stand for anything if it doesn’t stand for what it has historically stood for. It becomes a hollow idea, and I think they’re hollowing it out as fast as they can for their own benefit.”

Comedian and TV host Rosie O’Donnell also moved to Ireland when Trump was re-elected.

“I miss many things about life there at home and I’m trying to find a home here in this beautiful country and when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” she said at the time. “It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well. The personal is political, as we all know”.

Her comments prompted Trump to threaten to remove her US citizenship.

Meanwhile, Art Garfunkel recently opened up to NME about ending “years of detachment” from Paul Simon.

Simon & Garfunkel were one of the best-selling acts of the 1960s, selling over 100 million records and recording timeless hits such as ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, ‘The Sound of Silence’ and ‘Mrs. Robinson’.

However, they also became known for their troubled relationship, with artistic disagreements leading to their breakup in 1970. They have performed together sporadically since then, but not since 2010.

The latest feud followed a particularly razor-tongued 2015 interview Garfunkel gave to The Telegraph, where the singer labelled his former musical cohort a “jerk” and an “idiot” – an outburst he said he subsequently regretted.

Speaking about a recent meeting with Simon, he told NME: “Paul said to me, ‘Arty, it’s not that you spoke to the British press and that you didn’t do it well…[it’s that] I felt you wanted to hurt me. That’s what got me’. And I thought, ‘That’s true’. I wanted to hurt him. The next thing I knew, I burst into tears… and then there were hugs.”
