Mark the Spot , E3: Music

Mark the Spot , E3: Music

Of all the forms of creative expression, music is arguably the most universal. Alone or with others, in your Lincoln Nautilus® Hybrid or at a concert, while working or at play, hearing the right song—or even merely just the right chord—can help evoke memories, emotions, and full-body responses. It can help bring you closer to someone you’ve never met before and, inversely, strengthen your connection with the person who means more to you than anything else in the world.

On the final episode of Mark the Spot , multidisciplinary artist Temi Coker has a special surprise in store for his wife and creative partner, Afritina Coker, with some help from beloved Dallas music venue Revelers Hall and local jazz band Bishop Avenue Hot Six.

“Music has a way of marking moments. You can hear a song years later and suddenly it takes you right back to where you were, who you were with and how you feel,” Temi says. “That’s what stands out to me about the Revel® Ultima 3D sound system in the Lincoln Nautilus® Hybrid. The sound surrounds you in a way that feels intentional.”

Temi starts his surprise under the guise of visiting the venue to hear some great local musicians. Little does Afritina know, Temi is actually one of them. The Nautilus® Hybrid is perfect for their journey. Designed for music lovers, the vehicle’s Revel® Ultima 3D helps provide an encompassing audio experience with three distinct listening modes: Traditional Stereo, Audience, which replicates the experience of the best seat in the concert hall for an intimate musical experience, and On-Stage, a surround-sound experience that puts you in the middle of it all, placing individual instruments and musical elements throughout the cabin of your vehicle.

As a photographer and set designer with two children under two, Afritina’s opportunities to find time for herself have grown increasingly limited.

“Every small moment helps,” she says, whether it’s a monthly foot massage, a date night, or singing along to music in the Nautilus® Hybrid with Temi.

“Black women get overlooked a lot in the industry and her being a mom now, I’ve seen the battle with identity and guilt,” Temi says, explaining how important it is to find opportunities to celebrate Afritina as a uniquely wonderful individual.

On the day of Afritina’s surprise, the couple begins their trip to Revelers Hall. Temi has secretly been practicing to sit in with the Bishop Avenue Hot Six and perform a song—Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”—prepared especially for her. He grew up playing piano (add it to the Coker family’s already-overwhelming roster of creative talents) and has been quietly planning the performance in Afritina’s honor, alongside Joseph Reyes, band leader and trumpeter for Bishop Avenue Hot Six.

“You could tell how much thought Temi put into it and how much he loves Afritina. We are honored to be a small part of that. As musicians, we’re usually playing dances, parties, and club dates, but getting to help create a memory like that was really cool,” Reyes describes.

Revelers Hall co-owner Amy Wallace Cowan describes the venue as “small, intimate, and without a formal stage, so the artists and guests are sharing space and experiences in a really unique way,” making it the perfect setting for Temi’s surprise performance.

Tears in her eyes as she watches her husband perform, Afritina remarks, “I can’t believe he pulled that off.”

Creativity—be it music, fashion, or visual art—has always been deeply intrinsic to Afritina and Temi’s relationship: They originally bonded over photography and, back in 2015, before the kids and collaborative studio, Temi first confessed to having deeper feelings for Afritina during a date at a museum. The couple’s motto is “‘Till Death Do Us Art,” a phrase they immortalized on the Coker Studio “For the Lovers” jacket.

Similarly important is the opportunity to build their family in a community that celebrates creativity and collaboration.

“The creative community here in Dallas is incredibly vast and offers so much more depth than I think a lot of people realize. It’s been really special planting roots here,” says Afritina.

As Bishop Avenue Hot Six band leader Reyes puts it, “Dallas creatives are naturally curious about what everyone else is doing. Musicians show up to gallery openings, artists come out to hear live music, photographers and filmmakers are always working with bands. It doesn’t feel like people stay in their own corners very much. Most of the cool projects I’ve seen happen because somebody says, ‘Hey, I’ve got an idea,’ and a bunch of people jump in and make it happen.”

“As a creative, I’m always paying attention to how things make me feel. Sometimes that comes through visuals, sometimes it’s the space and atmosphere, and sometimes, it’s all in the sound,” Temi says of his Mark the Spot experiences with the Nautilus® Hybrid. “Art, style, music, and the people we share these experiences with. That’s what this journey has been about.”
