Samsung asks judge to dismiss Dua Lipa’s $15million lawsuit

Samsung have asked a judge to dismiss a $15million lawsuit against them from Dua Lipa.

The pop star filed the lawsuit against the electronic manufacturer back in May, claiming that they used her image without permission to sell TVs.

Samsung later responded to the lawsuit and rejected the accusations from the ‘Dance The Night’ singer, saying that the image was “provided by a content partner for the free streaming service Samsung TV Plus. It was only used after the content partner had given explicit assurances that all necessary rights had been obtained – including use on sales packaging.”

It added that it has “great respect for Dua Lipa” and the intellectual property of artists. It also said that it was “open to a constructive solution” with the singer.

Now, legal representatives for Samsung are seeking a dismissal of the lawsuit.

In new legal documents filed on Thursday (September 10), the company argues that the singer does not have grounds to sue because there’s “nothing suggesting plaintiff endorses the televisions,” per Rolling Stone.

“The images merely depict the televisions’ on-screen interface, illustrating the applications and … an example of content available on the TV,” lawyers for Samsung said.

Lipa’s original filing came in relation to the cardboard packaging of some of the brand’s TVs sold in 2025, which she alleged used a photograph of her without paying her or seeking her permission.

Her photo is used to promote the Xite Hits channel. Other logos that appear on the product include MLB, Fox Sports, and the crime series The First 48.

In the suit, her legal team claimed that she tried to get Samsung to stop using the image, but was faced with a “dismissive and callous” refusal from the company. They also quoted from some fan updates on X/Twitter, where some shared how they were considering buying the television after seeing the singer’s face on it.

“I’d get that TV just because Dua Lipa is on it,” one wrote, while someone else added: “I wasn’t even planning on buying a tv but I saw the box so I decided to get it.”

Her suit alleges a copyright violation, a violation of the California right of publicity statute, a federal Lanham Act claim, and trademark claims.

Lipa has not yet publicly responded to the comments from Samsung.

In other news, Lipa recently revealed the line-up she has curated for her London Literature Festival at London’s Southbank Centre, and it features Patti Smith, Mustafa, Zadie Smith and more.
