Ed Sheeran supported by Culture Secretary after US tour line-up drops out

Ed Sheeran supported by Culture Secretary after US tour line-up drops out

UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has expressed her sympathy for Ed Sheeran following the news that all remaining support acts on his US tour have pulled out of the line-up. Speaking on LBC’s Nick Ferrari at Breakfast, Nandy commented on the situation after rapper Macklemore was dropped from the tour for making pro-Palestinian remarks on stage, leading to the departure of the remaining opening artists.

Discussing the fallout on air, Nandy stated that she felt for Sheeran, noting that he had been left in a really difficult and impossible position. She explained that while Sheeran wanted to profile and platform supporting artists, promoters were unwilling to proceed once politics entered the arena. Nandy added that she hoped the controversy would not harm his tour, describing Sheeran as one of the UK’s most successful artists, someone who does huge amounts to reinvest in young people in Ipswich, and one of the nicest people she has worked with.

Addressing the wider balance between politics and music, Nandy acknowledged the long and proud history of artists using their platforms and art to comment on societal issues. However, she also highlighted the growing desire among audiences for entertainment to serve as an escape from global tensions, stating that life is tough for many people at the moment and that many simply want a space where they can leave politics aside and enjoy the music.

The remarks follow ongoing discussion surrounding political expression within mainstream live entertainment. The full interview, featuring Nandy’s comments on media, culture, and the music industry, was broadcast on LBC’s breakfast show hosted by Nick Ferrari.
