Combining our forces again feels incredibly exciting

Noisia have announced their return to the stage, along with new music on the way.

The Dutch D’n’B trio – consisting of Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen, and Thijs de Vlieger – formed in 2000, and disbanded just before the pandemic over “creative differences”.

Now, Noisia have unveiled their first new show in four years, to take place at Melkweg Amsterdam on December 4 – sign up for pre-sale access here.

In their statement posted today (Thursday September 17), they elaborated on their initial breakup, writing: “Back then, we tried everything we could to get us out of the deadlock we were in. We had to admit the answer wasn’t in more trying, in more force, it was letting go”.

They explained that they had “no intention” of returning to the band when the pursued their own solo projects, but spending time in the same building allowed them to “catch glimpses of each other navigating new terrain. Taking risks, growing.”

Though Noisia said they used to miss the feeling of discussing the band, “talking about Noisia would often lead straight back to thoughts about those struggles and pressures from the past.” In time, they added, those thoughts were outweighed by “memories of joy, beauty, and mutual respect”.

“We’d get a little giddy in conversations about the things we could maybe do. We took up bouldering together. We got closer. And slowly, plans began to hatch.”

Noisia eventually started “making music together again”, which made them “crave the excitement of the stage, and the feeling of sharing our music with crowds”. “We’ve grown a lot individually. We intuitively feel that our own endeavours can now co-exist with our Noisia project. Combining our forces again feels incredible exciting now”.

As such, the band intend to “experiment and play with our back catalogue and the material we’ve recently been making”, and will use the expeeriences playing their new music at these shows to tinker with the tracks in the future: “We’ll take our time before we release anything”.

“We hope to see you all there! Love, Martijn, Nik and Thijs,” they concluded.

As a trio, Noisia have worked with the likes of Skrillex and Korn. Following their breakup, de Vlieger released solo music under the name Thys, and formed VIER with Machinedrum, Holly and Salvador Breed along with ILY with Skrillex.

Roos, meanwhile, has released solo music as Sleepnet, and created side projects with Former and Jeremy Glenn of the Upbeats. Van Sonderen has made techno and house music as part of Zonderling.
