Johnny Marr’s guitar auction at Christie’s triples estimates to raise £3.6M

Christie’s landmark auction Marr’s Guitars: The Johnny Marr Collection has concluded in London, realizing a total of £3,649,280 and more than tripling its original presale estimates. The 111-lot sale attracted registrants from 34 countries, with 81% of bidders participating at Christie’s for the first time during an intense live bidding event that lasted over five hours.

The top lot of the sale was Marr’s 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo—the instrument heavily associated with his defining Smiths-era guitar sound—which fetched £358,400 following a five-minute bidding war, far surpassing its £60,000–80,000 estimate. Other highlights included his 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355, bought for him in 1984 by Sire Records founder Seymour Stein, which achieved £204,800, alongside a 1984 Cherry Gibson Les Paul Standard that matched the £204,800 figure.

Additional high-profile items included a 1971 Martin D-28 acoustic selling for £128,000, and Marr’s 2017 Fender Johnny Marr Signature Jaguar in Comet Sparkle—used to record the James Bond theme for No Time To Die with Hans Zimmer and Billie Eilish—which sold for £46,080.

Proceeds from 31 specific charity lots in the collection, including ten guitars as well as 1980s concert posters and sales awards, will have 100% of their hammer price split equally between The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and The National Autistic Society.

Expressing his gratitude, Johnny Marr noted that the auction exceeded all expectations, thanking both the global bidders and Christie’s staff for making the landmark event memorable. Representatives from both recipient charities praised Marr’s generosity, confirming that the funds will directly support sight loss services and autistic advocacy initiatives.

The auction success lands just ahead of the release of Marr’s new studio album, The Age Of Everything, arriving on 2 October 2026 via BMG, followed by November tour dates across Latin America.
