Lady A’s Charles Kelley has revealed he’s been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer.
The singer-songwriter shared his diagnosis in a video posted to Instagram, explaining that doctors discovered he had multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that starts in plasma cells.
The musician said he had suffered several “random rib fractures”, leading his doctor to order tests that revealed the disease.
“I think in the same spirit of the way we’ve kind of shared a lot of my sobriety journey, just getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing, and it takes the power away from it a little bit that we wanted to let y’all know what was going on,” he told fans in the video shared on Instagram. “And we’re going to get through it.”
Kelley assured fans he plans to keep working with Lady A, formerly Lady Antebellum, through the first six months of treatment.
“I believe it’s not going to be too super invasive. I can still work,” he shared. “I think, physically, I will feel like myself. I’ll have tough days, but you know, I want to keep working.”
Kelley said continuing to perform and spend time with his loved ones would remain a priority throughout his treatment.
“I need to be happy and doing what I love to do and spending and soaking up as much time with my family as I can as well.”
