The funds were generated during a sell-out headline event, An Evening with… Tony Iommi, held at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s Bradshaw Hall. Fans travelled from across North America, South America, and Europe to pack the venue, kicking off the night with a stunning string quartet performance of Black Sabbath’s classic “Paranoid” by Conservatoire students in the group Jezt.
Hosted by legendary sports broadcaster and close friend Gary Newbon MBE, the evening saw Iommi reflect on his extraordinary life and career. The guitar icon discussed the origins of his pioneering sound, which was forged after an industrial factory accident at age 17 cost him the tips of his fingers. Drawing inspiration from jazz great Django Reinhardt, Iommi crafted makeshift prosthetic tips and adapted his technique, paving the way for the birth of heavy metal.
The conversation also touched upon Black Sabbath’s historic final performance, Back to the Beginning, at Villa Park in July 2025, where Iommi reunited alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. Additionally, Iommi offered fans a glimpse into his ongoing projects, including his forthcoming solo album, From the Dark.
A host of music luminaries were spotted in the audience, including Toyah Willcox, Robert Fripp, and Bev Bevan. Conservatoire Principal Stephen Maddock OBE praised the monumental impact of the scholarship, emphasizing that financial backing is crucial to helping aspiring young artists from all backgrounds thrive in their studies.
By investing in local talent, Iommi ensures that Birmingham’s rich and rebellious musical heritage will continue to inspire future generations of musicians for years to come.
