The Democratic candidate was facing off against Republican nominee JD Vance, where viewers spotted a friendship bracelet underneath the cuff of Walz’ right sleeve. There were at least two bracelets, which have since been popularised by Swifties thanks to the track ‘You’re On Your Own, Kid’ off the 2022 album ‘Midnights‘.
The song features the lyric “so, make the friendship bracelets / take the moment and taste it” in its bridge.
On Tuesday (October 1), Walz could be seen with a red-and-white bracelet, along with a blue-beaded bracelet underneath. It’s currently unclear what messages are emblazoned on the accessories.
Walz went on to name drop the popstar in the debate as a supporter of Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris, who Swift endorsed last September: “She fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them”.
Taylor Swift’s relationship with politics has previously come under scrutiny when it was revealed she regretted not speaking out against Donald Trump during the 2016 election.
The singer made the revelation in the 2020 documentary Miss Americana, where she admitted “I’m sad I didn’t say it two years ago” instead of speaking out ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
When warned that Trump himself could take revenge, Swift responded in the documentary: “Fuck that. I don’t care.”
Since then, Swift has endorsed Harris for the 2024 elections, causing a “500 per cent” increase in voter registrations.
Meanwhile, Trump himself reacted to the endorsement, saying the singer could “pay a price”: “It was just a question of time. She couldn’t possibly endorse Biden… But she’s a very liberal person. She seems to always endorse a Democrat, and she’ll probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.”
Trump went on to proclaim: “I hate Taylor Swift” on his Truth Social account.
He had previously falsely claimed the singer endorsed him with an AI-generated photo, to which fans reacted: “Taylor Swift is gonna sue him so fast, he’ll remember why her last name is swift”.
In other news, a man has spent $4000 at an auction to buy and destroy a Taylor Swift-signed guitar.
