Nicole Richie has revealed she always knew Joel Madden would be her husband.
The reality TV star has admitted she believed she’d marry him before they’d ever spoken, explaining she felt an instant sense of connection with him after they were set up by friends in 2006.
“I had not dabbled with musicians. But our friend set us up not in a serious way at all,” Nicole, 43, told the Call Her Daddy podcast in an interview published on 11 December.
“She was like, ‘You’re single and he’s single, so this is probably not going to be serious, but you guys should hang out.’ We did.”
She explained the Good Charlotte frontman was so “shy”, he barely acknowledged her at the group get-together.
“Joel is very shy,” Nicole revealed. “The first night I met him, he actually didn’t speak to me, and I was like, ‘This is my husband.'”
She also recalled how after that first meeting, it was “on.com” between them – but that she told him a white lie to impress him after he invited her to his house to watch TV police drama The Wire.
“Never seen The Wire in my life,” Nicole revealed. “I go, ‘The Wire is my favourite show!'”
She added she had since grown to enjoy the series but that for “a long time”, she faked her enjoyment.
“Obviously, The Wire is an amazing show,” Nicole said. “But… I, for a very long time, pretended like I watched and loved The Wire.”
